An alleged drug dealer has been arrested in Chon Buri, a province to the south of Bangkok, with 780,000 methamphetamine pills, a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine, 6 kilograms of ecstasy, and a gun, yesterday. The police did not release the name of the alleged drug dealer as they say they don’t want to compromise their investigation into the suspect’s contacts. wow alot of drugs there ,anyone know about the penalties he or she will get ?

I heard alot of different penalties for drugs possesion all from pay off to death penalty .

As I read the paragraph above, it just sets off alarm bells of suspicion which may be justified and may simply be bad journalism and/or bad writing.

 

The police don't want to release the name of a guy who has been arrested in a Sub-District? To avoid letting his contacts know? Does that sound plausible? A Sub-District isn't actually a very big place and the drug dealer/drug user community within that Sub-District likely isn't that big; It seems very likely that any/all of the dealer/user community already know, and if they didn't, when the police name that Sub-District, they surely know now. Further, if there is a genuine desire to keep information private in the hope of catching others, why name the Sub-District? Seriously, why release anything to a tame media? The police don't really need to release information, at least not quickly, as local news ain't exactly rife with undercover reporters chomping at the bit to have a published scoop on the police raid, are they? Finally, why release anything at all? if, as the police claim, they want to catch the dealer's contacts, what possible reason is there to release any information at all?

 

There is something very fishy about this...

 

Is it a 'feel good' story released by the police to generally try to make themselves look better?

 

Is it specifically designed to counter-act the negative publicity of the 'Jo Ferrari' case?

 

Is it designed to let dealers and users in the Sub-District that they need to pay up quickly or face arrest?

 

Did this happen at all? In Thailand, the land of the not really free media, is there actually evidence that someone was arrested? The accompanying photo is of a police truck. Period.

 

Why aren't there photos of all the loot? Why aren't there photos of police pointing at something?

 

Even for Thailand this one seems... contrived.

 

Anyone else have that feeling?

If he pleads guilty AND snitches on others he’ll get life otherwise death which will be commuted to life when the next amnesty rolls along.  He’ll lose everything he owns as well as his freedom. All those drugs are Category 1 drugs so the top end of punishment scale. fyi - cocaine is Category 2, marijuana the lowest  at Category 5 and the only drug you can get a LEGAL fine only for possessing. The kilo of ice alone is a life sentence. The yaba and ice quantities are big but not all that outrageous by Thai standards. The 6kg of ecstasy is a lot by Thai standards and  it’s probably an import hence the hush hush approach.  Anyone in Thailand that knows the suspect probably already knows he’s been arrested. It be them dirty foreigners that the fine upstanding boys in brown want to  keep in the dark. The suspect would be definitely be  helping the police with their enquires, the cops wouldn’t be able to shut him up. Fear does that.
