I went through the entire process of qualifying for the COE. After being approved, I quickly realized what a waste of time and money to go there where I would have to hide, duck, and dodge like some wanted criminal or drug addicted addict just sit in a bar and sip on a few beers. Decided that's a game I wasnt interested in playing and canceled my trip. One can only imagine how grateful I am to have listened to the voice of reason and common sense!

Obviously no point in coming if you can't drink beer. After all, Phuket has no other attractions.

Except.......

Wat Chalong, Big Buddha, Sunset Point, Two Lady Warrior monument, Butterfly museum, island visits Yawn! Yawn! Yawn! Yawn! Massive Yawn after 35 years.

The above is what you do if you come here for the first time or you come with family. (Why any sensible family would bring their kids here beats me, its big boys playground)

So let's be honest, the majority of people come here to socialise, drink, party and exchange bodily fluids.

NOT SOCIALLY DISTANCE.

🤣

A friend of mine turned up today at my house and asked me where I've been going for a drink I said I've not been anywhere since it was banned

It seems like all these farang are ducking and diving and sneaking around just to get a drink he's telling me places where I'll get served, I want to go for a drink where I can sit and relax not looking over my shoulder seeing the bogies are coming,

Im not getting arrested over a bottle of beer, Thanks but no thanks I'll stay home and have a drink here

Suit yourself. As does everyone else. Including non-drinkers of which there's plenty.

Obviously a person can drink beer at home so they must be going to drink in a bar for social reasons. .

Is it just illegal to sell alcohol in bars or is it also illegal to drink it in public?

I wonder if there is a way around this if it is only illegal to sell it.

A bar could sell you a soft drink for the price of beer, you bring your own beer which you bought from a supermarket and drink that instead, have some sort of rule where you have to buy say five soft drinks over the evening.

That way the bar has only sold you soft drinks, it happens here in the UK for unlicensed restaurants, you can bring in your own bottle of wine if that restaurant allows it.

That is not at all true, the vast majority of tourists to Phuket are families or couples and most of those are from China or other parts of Asia.

Hardly any Chinese tourists go into bars as they seem to be more interested in eating at restaurants and going on tours.

I blame the news media that publicized the fact that the bars were selling alcohol illegally, sticking it in the face of the police.  I don't believe that they didn't expect the reaction from the police who could no longer pretend that they were unaware of what was going on.

"The police say that they just learned in the news that secret alcohol sales and consumption are occurring right under their nose. They claim they were unaware that bars were reopened in Phuket and that tourists were enjoying beers."

That's some quality work done. Don't they watch the news? Literally everyone knew this is happening. Even those hill tribes in the north probably know it😂

The blind leading the leading the blind. Those manilla envelopes really do affect your vision, causing a blind-spot.

Expats in Thailand by far and large sure act like a bunch of alcoholics... why is beer so important that you need it served with every meal.

From the thread it seems it is more tourists enquiring than expats

A lot of people want to enjoy drinks when on holiday

Tell us why in your words Im sure all of us would like to know your version

Absolutely, we as a travelers would like to now, why are they saying "no quarantine for fully vaccinated farangs" or " quarantine is waived". Then, as soon as we arrive at the airport, we ended up in quarantine for 14 days. Are they trying to trick us then screw us in a long run? We are not "idiots" as a traveler because I did my major research before I book my flight. I do appreciate for your comments if you can.

Did you arrive in Phuket and then ended up in quarantine? I have met people who booked sandbox from the beginning when alcohol was not banned then while in transit it got banned they also felt the got conned into coming to Phuket, I would feel the same,

Why go to Phuket if you are a non drinker then? Far better places in the world to visit than party central like Phuket if you don’t drink

The people in charge are not the brightest and are forever contradicting each other, Covid is a disaster in itself just like the people in charge in Thailand.  The wind changes direction they change the rule, the wind changes again back to the original direction they change their mind back to the original rule. And people wonder why farangs drink in Thailand.

No, I wasn’t thinking of Afghanistan.

I can why it might be in an option though if alcohol's not allowed here and bars are shut.

No, a lot of people want to enjoy bars when on holiday. The drinks are only there so you can tolerate all the other people in the bars. 🤐

Drinking is not banned, just serving in a public place where more-than-the-specified-safe crowds of people might gather. The private parties that are getting busted  are because of the number of people present, not expressly the existence of alcohol. So you can "enjoy drinks" as much as you'd like, just not in public.
