A reduction in import duty on cigars and alcohol looks to be in the works, as part of a government strategy to attract wealthy foreign residents and skilled professionals. According to a Bangkok Post report, the Customs Department is expected to slash duty by 50% for a 5 year period. The proposal is in line with the government’s plan to kick-start the decimated post-pandemic economy by attracting over 1 million wealthy foreigners to live and work in the country over the next 5 years, spending around 1 million baht per person per year and generating around 1 trillion baht for […]

That's rather small-minded, in their thinking, eh?

"What do rich people like?"

"Booze and cigars. We know this because we watch movies."

"If we drop the duties on those things, millionaires will flock to Thailand."

"Good idea."

50% will not cut it. cost needs to be just like you are in California, France, Italy or Spain enjoying a grass of wine with your dinner. or looking for a nice Merlot at Villa Markets.

and it looks like five years is when they will pull the rug out from this entire "wealthy foreign residents and skilled professionals" scheme.

Glad to know I am wealthy.  Spending $30,000 USD a year is considered low income in America :-)

That's right, raise it 40% or even 60% then post a 50% reduction for the rich with those visa, and everyone else pays the newer high price so they can fund more joint CCP and military toy projects.

In the meantime how many more official state owned airplanes are bringing fine booze in under the radar, and how many more are there of the type of Joe Ferraris out there bucking the system for automobiles?

Don't forget everyone loves a cigar with their Chang

Yes, lower the price of alcohol and tobacco for the rich. They're the ones not able to pay the extra few baht 🤣

How about reducing import tax down a little from 300% for bringing your personal belongings? I think that would be a bigger incentive if they're looking to get people to really move here full-time.

Meanwhile, today the government is also discussing a plan to "temporarily" raise the debt ceiling from 60% to 70-75% for ten years, because there are not enough tax revenues to cover expenditures. And the baht keeps falling.

Exactly, @ExpatPattaya.

Most (but far from all) farangs I know spend that without any problem, and that's before you factor in buying a new car occasionally, paying rent if they haven't bought, or paying fees for kids at an international school.

It's going from the sublime to the absurdly ridiculous.

Haha useless idea again, but at least to know cigarettes going to be more expensive let's stock in before that.. Thailand keep on dreaming with your billions..

BTW more tax on cigarettes = more black market cigarettes available on the street

Can someone tell me what provinces “Joe Gurkha Royal Courtesan“ and “Joe Isabella Islay Whisky“ are I charge of. These Tax breaks will certainly help them out.

They should add sports cars and classic cars to this also.

Wealthy people more likely to drive expensive cars than smoke cigars

Right, it's in the bag! Just emailed some European friends that the excessive wine prices will become a little less excessive. Now they're on their way to the airport to wait until the red-listing is lifted so they can settle here...

If they are waiting for the Red listing to be lifted. They can bring you a few duty free bottles to have with your Christmas Dinner 2022
