Domestic travellers who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be allowed to enter Phuket starting on September 8, Phuket Governor Narong Woonsiew announced. Travellers from overseas have been able to enter the island province under the “Sandbox” model, but with the rise of Covid-19 cases, Phuket officials imposed tight restrictions on domestic entry. Travellers will need to book and pay for their accommodation in advance. They’ll need to show proof of their reservation to checkpoint officers when entering the island province. Visitors must be vaccinated with two doses of Sinovac, Sinopharm, Sputnik V, or the one dose of Sinovac followed by […]

".. travellers must also have a negative result from a Covid-19 test, either an antigen or RT-PCR test, issued no more than 72 hours before arrival. Another Covid-19 test is also required for travellers who stay in Phuket for more than nine days"

*And when taken to account that a huge number of domestic traveler are vaccinated (10%), there'll be a looong queue😂

So the arriving locals need two jabs, a pre arrival test and one more on day five. However incoming tourists need two jabs, a pre arrival test, a test upon arrival, one on day six and another on day 12. Something is wrong with this picture.

To be honest I would rather go Koh Chang and support the businesses there. Phuket has made like its something special and now with more cases than lots of other provinces it's still demanding more hoops to jump through.

No "local tourist" will stay on the island for 9 days, then. Everyone longer here is having/looking for  business, methinks!

Another Covid-19 test is also required for travellers who stay in Phuket for more than nine days. The test will need to be done on the fifth day of their stay and at their own expense.

Or is proving, with accomodation reservation, fully paid proof: 8 nights only. So, how are these tourists tracked? And why dont they have to have an arrival test and need to do the test after 5 days, anyway?  International arrival have all that.

And it seems to work, under 100 international arrivals got tested sick, not even sure, they all brought it with 'em! Also it is proven, my simple numbers since April, that national travelers are the risky once, for the phuket region. Ok, numbers , that is the flaw, perhaps.

Oh Covid island in the sun …… they just need Harry Belafonte to do that advertisement for them. Good thing he is still with us.

As Phuket should now be in the red zone, as it has worse numbers than Chiang Mai has had for the last 2 weeks, maybe they just remove all the barriers - even open the bars again - let’s just party on dude.

Absolutely! The Sandbox is an abject failure and nothing short of a petri dish. It was a good idea, but it has just been completely mismanaged and is not safe.

What a scam, pre-paid reservations!  So you book in advance and pre-pay for your hotel.  So less than 72 hours before your arrival, you have to be tested.  What happens if you can’t get a certificate, you lose your money.  What happens if the rules are changed and you can’t visit, you lose your money.  Pre-paid rates are not necessarily the best rate or have the best benefits.    What happen if you book a hotel on points for a free stay, as this is not a pre-paid reservation.  All this is a scam to get money in the pockets of the hotel owners.  Smells like a kickback.

Why discriminate between Thais and sandboxer travelers?

It is necessary to impose the PCR test on arrival and quarantine in the hotel room ASH+ while awaiting the result OR delete for foreigners!

And having a dose of vaccine is not being vaccinated, it takes 14 days after the second injection.

A lot of contempt for foreigners.

Anutin's racist remarks on the dirty farang are not isolated words.

I agree something is wrong. Although as I read this article, I was fully expecting it to say just proof of vaccination. The fact they are demanding a PCR test at least shows something (although why only an Antigen will do for the locals?). However, Foreigners need to have another test on arrival and another on day 6 (locals don’t). It will be interesting to see what happens if you are a foreigner who is residing in Thailand and travels to Phuket. That’s going to confuse a few of them…

Agreed. And all of this of course applies to foreign “tourists” who also have to pay 20,000-40,000 baht for an airfare they may struggle to get back. They also need to pay for additional Covid insurance of 10,000 baht they may not get back. They also have to risk the status of Thailand changing in their home country and either not being allowed back or paying another 100,000 baht for hotel quarantine. There are plenty of SHA+ hotels on Booking.com with free cancellation up to the day before arrival.

A lot of domestic tourists come for 3 or 4 days as per when it was open here a few months back before the sandbox.. now if they come they can leave before the second test!

Yes, many members have asked that very question and, whilst no travel expert myself, there's every chance another, more knowledgeable member or my colleague, @Faz, will come to your help.  And your debut post, too, so many thanks for that!

Foreign tourists can travel on to another province, and return to Phuket.
If you came in on sandbox for Phuket, you are expected to fly out from Phuket again though.
