News Forum - Russian woman assaulted in Chon Buri
It’s not that there is a protocol not to discuss them. There are certain subjects we cannot discuss. Sexual assaults is not one of them. Maybe it is about preserving some shred of privacy and dignity for the poor lady? I’d be livid if my name was in the papers about this. I’d bet money the media didn’t ask her “Is it all right if we tell the world you were raped?” -

News Forum - Ukraine’s Zelensky defies Russia’s ultimatum to lay down weapons
Apparently Russia are forming new divisions in the west. “In a speech, Mr Shoigu also said the United States had stepped up strategic bomber flights in recent years, sent warships to the Baltic Sea and intensified training exercises in the region with its NATO partners. He said Russia would respond by forming new military units and divisions along its western border, and it was working to improve the combat strength of its troops. “By the end of the year, 12 military units and divisions will be established in the western military district," he said.” https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-21/russia-says-troops-close-to-controlling-luhansk-ukraine/101086918 If Russia needs more soldiers at the Ukrainian front (I like that term) why not just call up the reserves? -

News Forum - Canadian man arrested for stealing traffic barriers in Chiang Mai
And do you know his outgoings? Perhaps he had a sick mother or family member the was contributing a large proportion of his pension to. Perhaps he gave most of his income away to charity. The fact is, his nationality means nothing to the story other than to invoke racism and anti-western sentiment. But never mind. I suspect you come from a western country and happy to play along… -

News Forum - Thailand sets sights on “wealthy foreign tourists” to recover economy
Thailand will never get a lot of wealthy tourists, ever. It’s just not that nice of a place. The people are still great, but not the country. I got a Thai Pass and visited with my wife January to February, including a trip to Samui. No way I will come back until the TP is gone but that’s not the point. I first went to Samui as a backpacker in 1991. Chaweng was gorgeous, a real tropical paradise. This time we stayed in a luxury resort north of Chaweng, but visiting it for the day was a huge letdown. The entire beach is walled off - no access, except through a never-ending line of small resorts which you can’t walk through unless you are a guest. The road from Central is just one tourist shop after another. It’s not over-developed. It’s over, over-developed. You can visit Samui and stay at a luxury resort - there are a handful of really nice ones, but to get to your resort the drive from the airport is an eyesore, and there’s nowhere else to go that is pristine. So most tourists stay at their resorts. This is the same situation at Phuket. We will visit Thailand on a regular basis and stay in Bangkok and then go upcountry. But for beach holidays, no more. There are so many other places around the world - Caribbean, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Pacific countries, that have both super resorts and where the local areas are still beautiful.- 1
