BEIJING (ASIA NEWS NETWORK/CHINA DAILY) - TCM remedies used in previous Covid-19 outbreaks in China are being tweaked to effectively tackle the new Delta strain, according to medical specialists in the nation. They claim that combining TCM techniques with Western medicines has helped save patients' lives and has accelerated their recovery from the coronavirus.

TCM experts feel that the Delta strain has little effect on the fundamental pathology of individual Covid-19 infections, and that essential treatment methods remain basically the same, according to Mr Zhang Zhongde, vice-president of Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Guangzhou.

"Typical symptoms reported during the first wave of the outbreak, which hit Wuhan the hardest, such as gastrointestinal problems, fever, cough, and shortness of breath, show in the recent infection clusters as well," he said. Patients afflicted with the Delta strain are more contagious and have larger viral loads in their bodies, according to Mr Liu Qingquan, president of the Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

"Because recent outbreaks have happened during the summer, qi (a vital energy that helps the body maintain health) will be further depleted as a result of the season, resulting in patients feeling frailer," he stated at a press conference. Patients in clinical settings display symptoms sooner after getting the Delta strain, and more people develop fever, according to Mr Liu.

"While the guiding principle for TCM treatment is based on the national diagnosis and treatment plan announced in April," he explained, "we have adjusted individual prescriptions to the situations of patients." TCM practitioners, according to Mr Liu, are introducing more components that can help patients infected with the Delta variety reduce summertime heat-related symptoms. TCM medicines that are aimed to alleviate acute symptoms have become more extensively used to help prevent serious infections.

Since May, Mr. Zhang of the Guangdong Hospital has been fighting the Delta strain in the provinces of Guangdong, Yunnan, and Jiangsu. One important lesson, he noted, is to establish collaboration between TCM and Western medical practitioners in order to obtain the greatest outcomes for patients.

Mr Zhang stated that throughout the recent outbreaks, hospital wards were staffed with TCM and Western medicine groups who designed and agreed treatment plans. In one case, a seriously ill patient in Jiangsu was suffering from a high fever, bloating, and constipation after being placed on a ventilator. Mr Zhang said the patient was given TCM therapies to address these symptoms and enhance general vitality in order to stabilize his condition and allow him to be placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, life support equipment.

What next ? Scented candles, special "healing" crystals and special "birthstones" will cure Covid -19, including the Delta variant because so self appointed "health practitioner" heard about a guy who claimed to have 4 different strains of covid and was cured by placing those things around his mother's basement where he lives.
And for just $29.95 he'll send you an "All Natural Covid-19 prevention and recovery sample kit".
Act now and for another $4.99, he'll include a special candle with your personal birth month scent that's guaranteed !
(Guaranteed to line his pockets with your money that is.)

When a medical "professional" cites "one case" then you can be assured it's all BS. He doesn't even say that patient was infected with covid-19 and I haven't heard anywhere that bloating and constipation were symptoms of Covid - or happen to people put on a respirator.

And note he doesn't say that using "TCM" helped that person either.

And seriously, if there really was any benefit to TCMs, "big Pharma" would have tested, synthesized and marketed those remedies decades ago.

Oh and when they say "TCM doctors are keeping an eye on virus mutations" I nearly face-palmed.
Because I'm sure that old guy mixing ginger, gingko and ginseng in a pestle can tell if the virus has mutated just by the smell of the patient's sweat.

It's arrogant of the West to believe that all health ills can only be treated with their approach; surgical and pharmaceutical.

While there is obviously some quackery in traditional medicines, there is also a great deal that works and has proven itself rather efficacious over millenia.

One of my online students was a medical researcher in China.  She was taught and trained in Western medical techniques, but her job was to figure out why and how TCM works, in a way that Western practictioners could understand.

I, for one, prefer traditional treatment for some conditions as I know it's effective and I feel it's less stressful for my system.

I would happily embrace any traditional treatment that has shown to be reasonably effective, combined with Western treatment.

TCM has no side effects, Western medicine has tons. Even an aspirin can be dangerous.

Dont knock it if you haven't tried it.

Or...don't knock it if you truly don't understand or lack knowledge of said subject matter.

Just came across this topic. In the article TCM is used for treatment of symptoms, not the disease. Everything you administer gives a chemical reaction, food/medication/TCM etc. Agree in general with @kerryd. Keeping an open mind for alleviating symptoms, but still looking for statistical confirmation rather than case studies. Shouldn't be a problem as they have a huge population, it's widely used and they're great at maths.

Most of the questioners will be eating crow when the Chinese develop a naturally-derived therapy and preventative measures sooner than later.

So Mr Zhang Zhongde, the vice-president of Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, says they are using Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat the symptoms of Covid.  Yeh - right - how could that be unbiased. By the way - that was last month - have they released the clinical study that proves they work.  Sure they make people feel better - but are they a prevention or do they merely help people who have mild symptoms.  Please - if I am there one day in the future and get Covid1924A then please tell them to take me to a hospital with an ICU and modern medical services, equipment and people.

I will actually celebrate any remedy. But not because it works on someone's neighbours far away friend... TCM has been used for centuries and they have a huge population in China. Where are the figures? If they can do the research on Sinovac, surely they can do it on TCM as well?

Those stores are on every street corner in China, supplied by wholesalers. You think they wouldn't like to export it together with all the other Chinese stuff? And you think they wouldn't like to convince the west of how superior it is? If they wanted to supply numbers, that's easy and cheap. No research because they have everything on the shelf already. They just need to setup controlled tests over a few years.

Always sceptical if someone claims something, but has reasons not to provide evidence.

Could you convince BS to stop looking at research too, because 5.33 billion people have taken the vaccine with great success? 🙄

I wouldnt want to convince anyone of anything. I'm far too reticent and not nearly confident in my knowledge. I dont know 1.4bn Chinese people for example, or every street corner in that huge country.  Let alone all their wholesalers. Far be it from me to advise others. You arrive at your own decision.

I've been there often enough. And I'm not knocking it. To each their own.

But if they claim it works, before I believe it, I'd like to see some evidence. And that's not too difficult to supply if they really wanted to...

Fortunately we know about the vaccines and that good enough for me for now 😉

I subscribe to the lab screw up theory.

Expect war with China as the mRna vaccine companies fume.

They have supressed all treatments and promoted only vaccines.

The word is now getting out that covid can be prevented or treated cheaper and safer than with vaccines.

Yesterdays disinformation becomes todays medical advice

Some people only believe things when they see it on CNN, BBC or a corporate funded scientific report which they don't even understand.

The rest of us look at the evidence and reports from hundreds of doctors with thousands of recovered patients.

Ivermectin and Hydrochloriquine are two examples which are being used everywhere in a low key manner as going public results in the vaxoholics losing the plot and screaming horse de wormer or bleach.

Simply look at what had happened to Joe Rogan who recovered n 3 days using treatments that legacy media are outraged about, as it diminishes the sales of their beloved gene therapy vaccines

Once again, @AdamX, you just have to trot out one of your favourite pet subjects instead of staying on topic.

My god, how sick we are of hearing about ivermectin on every goddamned thread in the forum.

Really, keep it where it belongs and not hijack every discussion with your little pet cause.

According to the Phytomedicine Journal, TCM is effective in preventing Covid as well as treating Covid.

You can read more about it in this Medical Journal published in August last year.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7439087/

From the article:

TCM believes that the essence of infectious diseases is not viruses, but “grumpiness.” “Grumpiness” is a kind of evil that appears at the same time as abnormal weather. “Grumpiness” has the characteristics of strong pathogenicity, strong infectivity, entry route to human body through the mouth and nose, and specific lesion location.

If grumpiness was the cause instead of a virus, I'd have had Covid ages ago 🤣

Haha, I didn't say what I actually thought of the article. Up to you to decide. That part is hilarious. This gave me a bit of a laugh.

According to TCM, “wet poison” is caused by the combination of evil inside and outside. Thus, people who are cold or wet are very susceptible to the virus. In addition, sex workers may be heavily affected.
