The World Health Organisation has slammed the concept of booster shots while millions are yet to receive a first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. The WHO adds that there is as yet no scientific evidence that such boosters are necessary and administering them is immoral when so many countries are struggling with vaccine shortages. A number of countries, including the US and Israel, plan to offer fully vaccinated citizens a third, or booster, dose. But Mike Ryan, the WHO’s emergency director, has questioned the ethics of such a policy. “We’re planning to hand out extra life jackets to people who […]

Are the poor sods given Chinese vax allowed a booster or do they have get permission from that useless entity called WHO?

WHO talk a lot and when they do something they stuff it up. Bosnia and many other countries, they watch atrocities on their watch and do nothing, then Covid China etc etc etc.

Why does the media even listen to them, why do countries pay them money?

Good report. The developing world does need it's first round of vaccinations, we really need to understand the science before we issue the developed world a third shot as also don't want more waves of the virus in our countries. Could boost tourism to Thailand on a positive note.

“Now, I know there are some world leaders who say Americans shouldn’t get a third shot until other countries got their first shots.  I disagree.  We can take care of America and help the world at the same time.

In June and July, America administered 50 million shots here in the United States and we donated 100 million shots to other countries.  That means that America has donated more vaccine to other countries than every other country in the world combined.” - President Biden

Maybe the WHO shouldn’t have bent over backwards for China by denying human transmissibility was possible 3 months into Chinas initial outbreak

Really this will not be aided by countries setting vaccine expiry dates. Its started already with two European countries imposing expiry date regulations, many more will follow and I’m sure will become the norm.

The WHO needs to take its head out of China’s backside and look around the real world. Donate these vaccine directly & the elite will get then first not the needy, some of the balance will end up on the black-market making the corrupt ’’elite’’ richer.

@KAPRe your remark 'Donate these vaccine directly & the elite will get then first not the needy, some of the balance will end up on the black-market making the corrupt ’’elite’’ richer.', whilst warming to the basic thrust of your post, can you further outline how you would best distribute these expiry-pending vaccines?

Thank you, KC

I don't think the WHO should be talking about the "moral" issue of booster shots vs the rest of the world that is currently unvaccinated.

They lost all moral credibility when they bent over and assisted China in downplaying the Covid beginnings and China's response to the virus initially.

Europe has always exported covid vaccines unlike the USA which has even banned the export of basic (non-strategic) ingredients for manufacturing in Europe. the usa and europe are the contributors to vaccine donations.

How will the populations of these countries react? When already for the delta variant the vaccines do not generate enough antibodies and that we have studies showing that the drop in these antibodies is strong after 6 months except for Moderna 3 times more dosed than Pfizer?

We must quickly plan the solution for the following variant Delta which will necessarily be more contaminating than Delta to win! Either increase the dosage or change the formula.

Every year the flu vaccine is to be renewed what does the WHO say?

I have assisted WHO throughout my lengthy career and I have never encountered such an inept Director General as Tedros. It is now heading towards the second anniversary of Xi and Tedros cosying up and Tedros sat on it for 3 months, probably because he was doing what he does best, brown nosing with Xi. To describe him as a chocolate teapot would be an understatement. In the meantime he should keep his trap firmly shut.

The US is looking to give the booster in order to help save lives and bring the economy back - same goal as any country giving the vaccine.  As stated earlier, it is possible to do both - help your own country as well as others.  The US is the largest donor to the COVAX program and is also looking to start boosters in September.
While most of the COVAX program recipients desperately need help, some of the countries only needed to be included on the recipient list due to their government's mismanagement of governmental funds (waste/fraud/corruption).

It certainly seems plausible that administering a booster minimizes opportunities for the virus to mutate in those populations. This could be advantageous for everyone.
