The Tourism Authority of Thailand says both international and domestic tourism are likely to drop to an all-time low this year. The Bangkok Post reports that the TAT predicts international arrivals may only number 1 million, with domestic tourism dropping to just 50 – 60 million trips. Yuthasak Supasorn from the TAT says the target of 3 million foreign arrivals is still in place but Thailand could see only a third of that figure, meaning a 74% drop in revenue compared to the first 2 months of 2020, before the pandemic hit. Domestic tourism is also likely to fall well […]

What a load of absolute crap.. when these Thai tourism chiefs look into their crystal balls .. They must be that drunk to come up with the most rediculous of figures.. no doubt they have been down to the local kindergarten to get the infants help.. then they can blame them if the figures are wrong

Well judging by the press reports and TAT's own spiel I suspect most of them will just go and meet up with friends in the synagogue

Central Phuket:
All Central department stores to close for 7 days

Schools will stay closed until 16 August

All football arenas have to close

No group activities with more than 100 people

No more than 1 person per 4sqm in open markets

Kinda screws up the Sandbox thing.

Look on the bright side with "No group activities with more than 100 people" they could still have some fantastic orgies with 99 people just so long they don't have them on the football field or in an open market.?

One wonders what the purpose of this article is. Talk about stating the obvious. A bit like saying the sun is likely to rise this afternoon.

One thing I continue to ask is what sacrifices is Thailand willing to make, to create the so called hub they are constantly referring to? When you create the kinds of surly restrictions on tourism, that they have, it is no wonder nobody is showing up. It is likely that 80% of the sandbox tourists are returning ex-pats. So, what could they do if they really wanted to make the nation more appealing for tourists and ex-pats?

No restrictions whatsoever, on incoming tourists, who have been fully vaccinated with a real vaccine, and been tested. None. Quite the contrary. Offer them 10,000 baht gift vouchers, good at any five star hotel in the country, for food or accommodation.

Ten year visas for free?

Allowing foreigners to buy property here?

Reducing punitive luxury and wine taxes which drastically discourage wealthy tourists from visiting?

Reducing import duties on stuff we want to have shipped here?

Ditching the submarine project, to support the people?

It is amazing how these guys go on and on and on about what they are intending to do, and never, ever talk about the sacrifices they are willing to make, to attract these new businesses and investors, and tourists. A true COTU (Thailand is the center of the known universe) mentality, and it is so far from reality, it boggles the mind. Millions of jobs have been lost. What is being proposed to help those families get back on their feet?

The one principal here, that they have still not come to grips with, is that Thailand needs the world, 100x more than the world needs Thailand.

Thailand continues to be tone deaf, on the wrong side of history, and feeble, in its minor attempts to progress into this century. Anything this administration does is typically dumb, and unplanned. And the effects, ramifications and future are never considered. To call this heavy handed would be a gross understatement.

And who suffers? The common man, who represents about 80-85% of the population here. Yes, the same ones who are taking their lives at this moment, due to the catastrophic failure of this heinous administration, and the toxic dinosaurs leading the nation into the abyss.

A customer in the GoGo bar I had used a Nokia 3310 for similar effect. The phone was put on 'vibrate' and the girl got the punter to call her while it was inserted. The number of 'missed calls' she had was enormous.

Tourism has been dying a slow death for the entire seven years the tin pot guys have been in power. They have never supported the industry, they have established draconian rules, regulations, declarations, proclamations, and more nonsense to turn off tourists. In addition they are engaging in a "holier than thou", fake puritanism campaign, and want to outlaw the nightlife, the bars, massage, and other entertainment.

Covid has only exacerbated a situation which was already in motion. Now, after 16 months of far more intense sabotage to the industry, it is essential dead. Tourism will never recover to any meaningful degree here, in our lifetimes. You can only sabotage an industry so much, before it keels over and dies.

A tiny man, with major self esteem issues, who cannot handle criticism on any level. Reminds me a bit of the orange stain, back in the US. What a choice as leader of the nation. Talk about setting an example for others!

Well, he better either quit now, or get used to the critiques. They are only going to get worse! This is his own doing.

The idea of 3M tourists this year was always fantasy. To get even half of that would have required the opening of the entire country well before October. Clearly they have finally given up on that idea and now hope to just salvage whatever they can. Phuket had already proven they will never get more than token numbers until they rethink entry requirements. They need to move to a more European model of vaccinated travelers with a preflight test only (better to require quality vaccines only too). No more testing  upon arrival, multiple tests, quarantines, tracking apps, COEs or special insurance. Phuket has also shown tourists are not bringing in the virus, the few testing positive are catching it here. If you can’t make it as easy, people will go somewhere else.
