In a significant U-turn, the Thai government says it’s prepared to hold talks to join Covax, the global initiative that aims to ensure equal access to vaccines. Thailand famously became the only Southeast Asian nation not to join when it had the opportunity to do so last year. At the time, government spokesman Anucha Buraphachaisri said Thailand preferred to sign its own deals with vaccine manufacturers as by law, the government couldn’t spend money on vaccines where there was no proof of efficacy. Several million doses of Sinovac later, and with a record high of 13,655 new infections and 87 […]

So, there's your answer, if you were curious as to how long they'd planned this lock down for. I guess if you're booked to fly in to see your teerak at any point in 2021, you may want to go ahead and give that a cancel. ??‍♂️

mate - dont even try ?  They make so very little sense and they have been like this for decades.  The Junta is very ordinary, but those before them were also not very logical or coherent either.  It is just that the Junta carry around guns, but all they do with them is keep shooting themselves in the feet.

Nakorn says the reason behind such bureaucracy is because the national budget is being spent, which needs the input of several parties.” - That type of thinking is why Thailand will never break out of the middle income trap. In time of national emergency is when the bureaucracy is suppose to disappear.

Bureaucrats are the true enemy of the people. They dont all mean to be bad, but they are. It is in their nature to stop over productive people and drag them down to their level.

Oh dear how embarrassing for a nation so dedicated to saving face to  now have to eat humble pie in finally realising that the total lack of a cohesive thought through strategy principled on money alone is imploding on a daily basis ..

This is what you get when people patently unsuited to running a country take control ..

Even though the NVI has tried to do all it can, it cannot procure enough vaccines to respond to the unexpected situation.

We are now 18 months into this "unexpected situation".

This might offer some insight into why the Thai government has had such difficulty in procuring enough vaccines:

talks are being accelerated with various vaccine manufacturers, including those of mRNA vaccines, but there has been no decision yet on how many doses will be ordered or when.

At this stage, the government of Thailand are the undisputed biggest clowns of the pandemic.

Everyone in the world knows why Thailand "preferred to sign its own deals with vaccine manufacturers", and why the manufacturers had to walk away from those talks in 2020.

There has never been a clearer example of how lethal bureaucracy and endemic corruption can be. The Thai people know this. Now the question is whether they have the courage to do something about it.

I have some collegues working in Laos, all of them have their 2 shots since may and june. They got Astra, moderna and Pfizer. Johnson&Johnson is now avaiable, too. Everybody Lao or foreigner just walk in registrate and then get his shot. He told me it needed all together about 35 minutes . They have all over the country walk ins for vaccination not this bureacracy or useless apps like Thailand. Laos is in the covax program and their vaccination management compare to Thailand is huge and showed Thailand failed completly.

No one's going to jack squiggity squat, they're gonna comply with whatever measures are implemented. Especially the ones regarding mass gatherings of any sort, that'll be on the books for the next 5 yrs along with the emergency decree.

No extra registration or app for foreigners. Everybody just walk in registrate wait and get the shot, walk ins. For Pfizer is in Vietiane where they have the cooling system for extra deep cooling. They got it over covax, too.

thai corruption would never stand for that here

Very true, the highest and wealthiest in this country still believe it is their right to act like depraved animals, steal money from the country that directly impacts the poor and needy and consider that they should still be worshipped for not cutting their heads for daring to look at them. The vaccine scandal is another prime example how these depraved individuals consider that their shit does not stink and the rest of the country should be happy to eat it.

I'm not trying to defend Thailand for a second, but if what you say is true in Laos then why are less than 10% of their population fully vaccinated?
