Yesterday, a spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy says they are going ahead with plans to buy more submarines from China. The Royal Thai Navy was undeterred by rampant outrage on social media over buying 2 submarines for 22.5 billion baht is an indulgence while the country is besieged by Covid. Others criticised the move by saying the submarines are unnecessary and not too useful in the shallow waters of the Thai Gulf. Also, the poll that showed one of the public’s biggest concerns was the purchase of submarines by the Royal Thai Navy. The Navy persisted in the face of […]

Seriously messed up. The country needs vaccines, needs an mRNA production as of a year ago, and instead of investing in critical care, the generals must buy Chinese submarines. Thailand doesn't have  proper forest fire fighting equipment including water bombers, and needs helicopters, but they can find money for submarines that will be obsolete within a few years.

How do you know what the country needs? The country doesn't need the vaccine, people do. So if the country needs submarines, then submarine it is. :)

Why should they be undeterred, do the people of Thailand not understand that the current government does not give a sh*t about what anyone thinks, they will keep doing what they want at the tax payers cost for as long as they can, they don't care if the country goes down the toilet, they don't care if people are dying because they didn't buy vaccines in time but they have to keep buying the toys for the military (tanks / planes / submarines).

TIT.

Quite apart from the financial idiocy of this purchase is the fact that Admiral Somchai or whatever his name is proposing to buy submarines from the one country that could be seen as a potential agressor. So if I was Chinese I would secretly build a self destruct device into the boats and laugh my tiny tits off when Captain Confucius presses the button and waves goodbye to the Thai deterrent.

And it's the same everywhere.  Western countries may not be buying crap chinese subs but they spend elsewhere regardless of public sentiment.

Funny story, years ago Australia commissioned new submarines and put out to tender for aircon supply installation.  Friend of mine won the tender based on their specs and listed all equipment he would supply.  When he went to commence the 1st install, he discovered the subs used 110 volt for auxiliary systems.

Upon reviewing the specs there was NO mention of 110v anywhere.  Gov paid him in full for all his 240v gear and he reordered 110v from USA.  Turned out very lucrative for him.

Thus, breaking this contract would be pretty much impossible and could put Thailand in a “difficult situation”. - that’s not believable. What possible difficult situation would Thailand be in? The Chinese would be mad? Contracts to purchase military equipment are based on funding. In other words they don’t take effect until the funding is approved. Thailand would not be on the hook for the other two. You don’t even have to pay more for the first as any quality discount is built into the price of the follow up order.

That may be so but Western countries are fully answerable to the electorate so hence they can not run roughshod over the entire nation, unlike what appear to be the norm here

True but they usually only get tossed out of Govt. after the horse has bolted.  Difference here it takes a coup.

Sorry to disagree but the from time of signing of contracts to commissioning of the latest submarines it is in the order of 12 years. That is 3 government terms for some countries and 21/2 for others

Geez your a hard man ... it doesn't have to be 12 year contracts.  Take NZ for example, and it's just a tiny example, has handed out approx 4 mil (NZD) in the past month to criminals or organisations set up and run by criminals.  The electorate is ready to toss Ardern out, next election but those funds will be gone!

I can see the point of view of the Thais.

Anyone heared the expression Big hat no cattle. Well in the Thais case it is big chest of medals no weapons.
