New British Ambassador

Well I hope your Pommie Ambasador takes a more active interest in the welfare of your citizens living in Thailand, than our Aussie Ambassador does.  But lets face it - all he will probably want is the cockltails available at the local dinner party circuit. Your FCO and our DFAT is renowned for being the same - full of useless 'diplomatics' and 'jobs for the boys/girls'.

Well he can not be worse than the outgoing one. And as for 'jobs for the boys/girls' then perhaps with British Ambassadors for Thailand it appears more of a case that is  "jobs for the boys/boys"  555

I shudder to think what sir Anthony Rumbold ambassador here from 1965-67 would have thought of the last few appointees. Here is part of what he said on leaving Thailand, he'd be cancelled inside a day now of course!

Sir Anthony Rumbold, who served in Bangkok from 1965-67, did not mince his words when reflecting on his Thai hosts.

“They have no literature, no painting and only a very odd kind of music; their sculpture, ceramics and dancing are borrowed from others, and their architecture is monotonous and interior decoration hideous,” he wrote.

“Nobody can deny that gambling and golf are the chief pleasures of the rich, and that licentiousness is the main pleasure of them all,” he said, adding “The general level of intelligence of the Thais is rather low, a good deal lower than ours and much lower than that of the Chinese.”

OH OH! If I quote passages from the esteemed SIR Anthony Rumbold will I be banned Kapitan?

Thank you Thai13

Sir Anthony did also have this to say though ...

The British ambassador's leaving missive described the then Thai foreign minister as “vain, touchy and disputatious,” adding “His obsessions about liberals, about the French and about Cambodia sometimes make one wonder whether he's altogether sane,” while conceding “He's not altogether entirely repulsive.”

Sir Anthony does have a few good words to say about the Thais, however.

Despite their faults, “it does a faded European good to spend some time among such a jolly, extrovert and anti-intellectual people,” he said, praising their “excellent manners... fastidious habits (and) graceful gestures.”

“If we are elephants and oxen, they are gazelles and butterflies,” he added.—

Mark Gooding OBE is the new British Ambassador to Thailand. You may find out more about here !!!!!

Well hopefully he will be better than the last 1, he was more concerned with his American boyfriend than his responsibilities as Ambassador.

Also his dress sense was a disgrace.

Can't argue about his ineffectiveness but Colin, - seriously, glasshouses and stones, "dress sense was a disgrace" - all I can say is that it is fortunate that camera phones weren't in vogue in your Prakhonchai days  LOL!

Don't get to optimistic Colin because if you read my link you would have seen he is married to Dr Christopher McCormick, an education specialist !!!

I think we are both in the same boat on that one Bob.....IMO they are all a bunch of w4nkers and I have yet to see any ambassador do anything useful - other than attend cocktail parties.

DFAT (Dept of Foreign Affairs) in Australia and POC (Foreign & Commonwealth Office) in UK are both very similar if the type of work they do (overseas Embassies included) and the type of person that work for those organisations. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

This is not meant to be homophobic but I just wish we could get an ambassador with balls, who actually cares and does something for their citizens living abroad.

I worked in Canberra for some years and went to some of those 'cocktail parties' both in Aust and a few Overseas, and I just have to ask - what makes you think they are useful??
