Thailand’s private hospitals say that if the government would help cover the medical costs of Covid-19 patients, private facilities could help ease the burden on the public health system. The Bangkok Post reports that Pongpat Patanavanich from TPP Healthcare International, which owns MedPark Hospital, says medical costs at private hospitals are too high for those with limited budgets. According to Pongpat, the average cost of treatment for a Covid-19 patient can rise to more than 200,000 baht over a 14-day period. And this is only in the case of people whose condition is stable and who only require monitoring. In […]

£332 a night! and that is for a patient who only needs monitoring?

The Pattaya Hilton charges £84 a night.

This Patanavitch has been charging this ridiculously high charges to insurance companies for so long he deludes himself that he has a right to do so.

He is dealing with the wrong payer when he is dealing with the Thai government. They are Thai also.

Too bad you have to treat patients at realist prices Patanavitch. Go and have a lie down in one of your hospital beds to recover.

well, in all honesty a finger can be pointed at this government for not being proactive but blocking all vaccines waiting only for what they wanted here only for their own reasons. So they should be responsible, but they won't admit even if stepping in poo even if the did.

@TobyA, for once I couldn't agree with you more - simply outrageous and nothing more than profiteering.

If people are happy to pay that, fine, but to expect the government to do so during a pandemic is way out of line.

There's a State of Emergency - just requisition the hospital!

As hospitals in Bangkok struggle with bed shortages, Pongpat says people with only mild symptoms can self-isolate at home, while receiving advice from medical practitioners.

Another glaring example of one-country but two worlds.

What "home" are millions of Thais supposed to self-isolate in?

Their shared room in Bangkok or the city, which they share with 2 or 3 others?

Or their extended family / multi-generational home back in Isan?

He points out that around 60% of Bangkok’s hospital beds are in private hospitals.

That really surprises me, and there can only be two reasons for it I can think of:

Either everyone in Bangkok is so wealthy that they prefer to pay for private hospitals or for insurance for private hospitals;

Or if many in Bangkok fall ill they're simply told to go back home to Isan, where there are small  hospitals in every town and a main hospital in every capital, and in many provinces such as Loei maybe no more than 5 or 10% of hospital beds are in private hospitals.

For once, Isan has it better than Bangkok (depending on your point of view).
