Following the fire in central Thailand’s Samut Prakan that cost one rescue worker his life, 39 injuries, and saw 80,000 people affected, the government is telling the Ming Dih Chemical factory to move its operation to an industrial location if they want to stay in Thailand. The Department of Industrial Works has told the company to shut down the factory, says Industry Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit. Suriya adds that the company would have to relocate to an industrial estate where the company must follow industrial rules. The minister did not state if the factory was previously following different rules. Despite being […]

Huum, what's the saying about closing stable door after the horse has bolted.

They must move the factory which just burnt down and affected 80,000 residents . Maybe someone will step forward and own up to giving them building permission in a residential area in the first place !

This would be a good time to pass amendments forcing all new factories using volatile chemicals to be built outside residential areas. Risk management coupled with health and safety are not new concepts and should be more important than cash incentives to the few higher up who decide what building goes where.

And what about the other same type of factory and factory that deal with potentially other volatile material in that area? If you look, there is an almost identical factory just next to this factory down the street. What are they going to kill everyone's goose there who has heavy investments and pull here?

And as the entire complex appears to have been reduced to rubble and ashes exactly how  will they move it ? - in rubbish skips ?  Doubt it very much, just an opportunistic comment by yet another minister of this corrupt government to solicit a big brown envelope to allow the story to disappear.  The real issue is what was there first ? If the chemical complex was there first then whom or what allowed residential development around it ? If the reverse is the case then the same questions applies. If as I suspect there were ever any zoning rules in place, and possibly still are not, then that reinforces my assumption that this minister is just looking for big brown envelopes, after all that is Thai administrative culture is it not ?

HolycowCm, can't quite make out if you are agreeing a second potential disaster if located only yards away or if you are saying better to gamble with peoples lives and let them take their chances as it provides income to the community.

The answer should be move it and provide infrastructure for the workers to be able to attend the new site. Heavy industry should not in in residential areas under Thailand's own laws and I'm guessing this is an old factory pre dating the law or it was build without the permits required as its not in an industrial zone as required.

I agree local people all need income but if it relocates it still needs people to work there and the jobs relocate with the plant
