A policeman swapped his tight, zip up uniform for saffron robes last week in a cunning plan to lure two drug dealers to arrest in Ratchaburi province, central Thailand. Villagers in Ban Pong district complained to police that Ya Ba (“crazy drug”) was being sold at a famous temple in the area, so Superintendent of Ban Pong Police Station Pol. Col. Piyapong Wongketujai went to investigate on Friday. The officer requested to borrow some robes from the monks and shaved his head, transforming into what appeared to be a true member of the Buddhist Sangha. The “monk” waited near an […]

However, the police officer actually broke the law in the process. If you are not ordained as a Buddhist monk – in an ordination ceremony recognised as legitimate by Thailand’s Buddhist clergy – then wearing monk’s robes in Thailand is illegal.

Nice. Not the run-of-the-mill (lazily copy-pasted, translated and rephrased source) article, but a valid & valuable insight was actually added to give a more complete perspective. More articles like this please...

If this is the law then it is broken constantly at funerals etc when children and grandchildren of the deceased shave their heads and dress as monks for the day.

Possible ??? that if the occasion is approved by the head monk of a particular Wat and the persons  remain on the WAT grounds there may be dispensation.

OK 5 years in jail for the drug pushers and a 500 baht fine and a wai for the policeman.

Followed swiftly by a promotion.

I disagree (which is a nice way of saying you're wrong), as that promotes setting the police above (and hence unaccountable by) the law. In this case:

(Section 208) Whoever, wrongfully dressing or using the symbol manifesting that oneself to be Buddhist monk or novice, holy man or clergyman of any religion so as to make the other person to believe that oneself to be such person, shall be imprisoned not more of one year or fined not more of two thousand Baht.

Give a penalty (or don't) to the officer but the real case should be dismissed to set boundaries to what is allowed in police work. If the line is allowed to get too thin/vague, we'll have things like arbitrarily tapping lines and planting drugs before you'll know it ;-)

What to say he get them he saves many life's.. I think is pretty well done and shaving his head for to get these drugs dealers.. bravo is in his place, this guy really cares to get these bastards and to do his job. Thailand has many laws , that are not needed at all, and exceptions should be made for to do the greater good for many other people. If people do not complain about his actions why should anyone else then

Dude... it's a movie.

Almost all countries have laws against wearing law enforcement uniforms (if you're not one) ergo all those cop movies are illegal too?

Hahaha... what you propose is that Thai's worry more about setting boundaries for police than they worry about criminals committing crime because it "MIGHT" lead to other abuses.

One of my favorite series of stories in the USA is when the police are trying to find someone wanted for a crime and the person goes into hiding.  They suspect the relatives know where the person is but of course conceal where the person is hiding out.

They send a fake "winning" lottery or winning prize promotion to the person's last known residence or have it forwarded to one of the persons relatives.

The prize/lottery will give instructions to go to some prize redemtion center along with their winning certificate and their ID to claim the prize.  Pretty explicit that only the person named can claim the prize and the date and time they must be at the redemption center to claim their prize.

The police then set up a fake "redemtion" center complete with banners etc and wait for those that they sent the winning promotion cards out to.
