After many migrant workers infected with Covid-19 were reportedly abandoned at the Public Health Ministry’s Pre-Admission Centre in Bangkok, it is now temporarily closed to migrant workers. The centre is used to screen people who are infected with the virus before sending them to a facility for treatment. Apparently, a number of workers have been dropped off at the centres. Without notice, and due to the number of people needing treatment for the coronavirus, the centres had problems with management. Department of Medical Services director-general Somsak Akkasilp says the department is not biased against migrant workers. While hospitalisation is available […]

Unsure of if these workers require a covid test before going home. Now they are stuck in Bangkok. Catch 22.

So not ‘biased against migrant workers’ but is ‘closed (albeit ‘temporarily’) to migrant workers’

Now I could be wrong (it has happened!) but is this not a contradiction in terms?!

A some what strange approach to managing the spread of a pandemic, don’t test a demographic

presumed to have a high infection rate!  What exactly is believed will happen as a result of this

action, an increase or decrease in the spread?!?!?!?!?!? NUTS!

A strange approach, indeed, but, then again, so is the DMS . . . very strange, in fact!

According to some Thai media reports, and hinted at here, what was happening was that a lot of the construction sites and companies that are to be closed and quarantined for a month were taking advantage of a window of opportunity before the closures are enforced and they were dumping truckloads of hundreds of migrant workers at the screening centre so they're not responsible for them for the month that they're closed (even though the government has said they will provide support).

Despicable, but the blame lies with the companies who are trying to dump their migrant workers on the DMS, not the DMS.

Reportedly plenty are being trucked back to the borders too, untested.
