Too many "harsh" comments here. Let's not forget, 9 grams folks. Plus he got it in a "neighboring" ASEAN country, where it's perfectly legal (hardly the stuff of smuggling movie plots). At this point, Thailand's action introduced a big headache for the Indonesian (and Malaysian) authorities.

Part of a deterrent is for the criminal to experience the serenity of a Bali prison!

They broke the law he must pay their price so to speak!
Lesson to be learned especially for the purple hair nose ringer’s! Mom and dad aren’t gonna save you this time

I get what you are saying but it's a victimless crime. I assume first time offender (in Indonesia).

Weed is less damaging than just about anything else, including alcohol.

Whens the last time you read about a driver high on some pot driving in to a group of people or killing a family in their car recklessly driving...lol..

The worst these folks are going to do is fall asleep on your couch and eat all your doritos and ice cream

But if you think having the guy raped, sodomized, life ruined is appropriate for a few joints that's your choice

Nope, the stupidity of a Brazilian traveler did!

If you are travelling to SEA but have no clue, that Indonesia is a "conservative" Muslim country, with harsh drug laws, you better don't get a passport to travel outside your country. You did not even look up  your holiday destination!

How many non Indonesian people got highlighted, in the medias over the past years, for drugs in Indonesia? If you did not get the death sentence discussion, you better stay home!

Since it seems only for personal use, he won't have to fear death. Just some years in prison. But his country can get him out, early

Oh shite, in Brazil it is not even "really" legal!

A couple of small points. Indonesia, love it or hate it, is a Sovereign Nation with its own laws. Also ignorance is no excuse of the law.

If this 'student' had only newly arrived off their momma's teat, a certain leeway could be allowed. This was not the case and having (by reported accounts) previously studied in Thailand, there is no reason - apart from sheer stupidity - to presume he had no idea that drug importation into Indonesia COULD invoke the death penalty.

Make your bed then lie in it.

Don't do the crime if ya can't do the time

Really, 25, he should have known the laws to the country(s) he is traveling to.

As someone stated, ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law.

Stupidity is a good reason for breaking the law.

On the flip side, 'anything is legal if ya don't get caught'.    😉

It’s just not worth it. I’m sure he could have found it there if he tried. Stupidity is not a get out of trouble ticket. What a waste of your life.

Even the police sell it on the streets. Just fgotta be careful of which ones are dealing and which are the arrest sting

9 grams sounds like just a personal stash.

Stupid to carry it yes.

Make him pay a big fine, permaban from Indonesia, and send him back where he came from with a stern warning about doing stupid things like carrying extremely aromatic drugs in to a foreign country...

This doesn't warrant extended jail time imho..or lock him up for media and quietly do the above after his lawyers show up.

Indonesia has a well-publicised and vicious attitude toward drug importation that has received worldwide media attention in at least the last ten years. To have expressed ignorance of these laws, a person would have had to be isolated in the back blocks of the Amazon and communing with nature. "I didn't know" is nothing but a small child's bleat when caught doing something wrong.

That drugs are openly available in Bali is also blatantly obvious, so this overage child receives no sympathy from me

Some idiot smuggled hash oil into Russia. Sleepy Joe is gonna save her.

I sincerely hope not, although she has an expressed hatred of the USA and its flag, so both good motivation for Sniffy to stand proud for

Hopefully she’ll  say UNCLE and stop taking the knee as a prerequisite!

Go to jail over in the glass and she will soon learn to get on her knees. Miss the democratic freedom of America then? Much?

Here is a story for ya.

Once upon a time, a time many decades ago, there was a nice young strapping young buck with long hair that flowed way past his shoulder blades who went to Bali and got to Bali immigration passport control. They stamped this kid in on his passport, but the next officer would not let him pass through the gate point. As much as the young kid said hey what's going on and what's the problem, he is met with resisitance. So the young kid then saw another officer point to his head as like the hair an nodded. So as everybody is stamped in and walking through no problem, the young agitated angry handsome young kid somehow understood, and then took out a hair tie and pony tailed his hair back. It was then at this moment that the young kid was waved through to go. Point is, errr. Bali and Indonesia is a dangerous place to the naive and stupid ones who think they are actually smarter. End of the story is the young kid had a lot of fun in Bali, and never was required to ponytail his hair after that.
