While government figures report around 2,000 new cases of Covid-19 per day, a respiratory disease specialist says that the actual number is hugely underreported. In a Facebook post, Dr Nithiphat Chiarakun, head of the department of respiratory diseases and tuberculosis of Mahidol University’s Siriraj Faculty of Medicine estimated that there could be as many as 50,000 new Covid-19 infections every day in Thailand. Not surprising. Many  infected had mild symptoms. I expect that the the detention center approach vs allowing people to stay at home in isolation discouraged many from reporting their condition.  I think we will see an explosion of cases once the tourists return.

Yes. It is under reported. Most illnesses are under reported. It's why so many people live with HIV, TB, STIs, Hepatitis etc. infecting others, until the  disease becomes critical and they either require emergency care or die. How do you think chronic infections persist in a population?
