I would tend to take the FT - it may be a very Establishment newspaper, but it is generally apolitical in stance. Much like Reuters and Bloomberg, who both charge very substantial amounts for their live news and financial feeds and have a vested interest in getting it right (a dedicated Bloomberg terminal giving you live financial data costs $2000 a month). -

A lot of tourists do like it though, and not just "shop till you drop" package tour Chinese. I first visited Patong over 30 years ago, back then Rat Uthit Road had very little development, it was mostly just empty land from there back to the hill. If you want Thailand like it was back then - try Laos. -

Since when have parrot fish been protected? As for fishing in the national parks, the Thai fisherman seem to have no problems "obtaining permits". Back when I was doing a lot of scuba diving around Phuket and Phi Phi it was far from unusual to spend quite a lot of the dive removing abandoned line and net from the coral. -
