Chiang Mai’s bars and clubs have been waiting a long time, but finally, from tomorrow, they can once again welcome back customers. As the Covid-19 situation in Thailand continues to improve, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration has given nightlife venues in the green and blue provinces the go-ahead to re-open for business. Those that have survived, that is. According to a Nation Thailand report, Chiang Mai’s governor, Prajon Pratsakul, has confirmed that bars, clubs, and other nightlife in the northern province can re-open in line with CCSA guidelines. He warns that such venues will come in for close scrutiny […]

Sadly there are numerous cues that did not survive because of the total lack of assistance from the government. Indeed the rulers used the pandemic as a toll with which to destroy the hated liquor industry. With the current restrictions, regulations and added costs it is hardly possible for a bar to trade profitably even when full. Add to this the fact that people have now got a preference to stay at home and the scene is actually pretty discouraging. Visitors to CM will still find a graveyard at night as well as during the day.

why would you expect a  beer bar or 'club" to receive government assistance? How could any one operation  be a critical industry as food retailers, food processors,  financial institutions, or manufacturers are? To bail out one club would have required bailing them all out. It is no secret that most of these bars and clubs are crime related and do not pay much in tax. Therefore, the priority was given to critical service providers, to companies who wmployed the most people and who contributed the taxes that  kept everything running. Bars and nightclubs are the easiest business to replace and like rodents have a short lifespan until they close.

Yeah it's really depressing. The jewel of the north is a ghost town.
