As it's been a few years now since I returned i'll be flying back soon what i need to ask is do i have to still fly to Phuket or can i just go anywhere once i land in Swampy?

Can go anywhere. I recently went through Soyouwannaboom.

First checkpoint, QR codes were scanned by a panel of 5 seated women. Would be a  good idea to  print a paper copy ( as well as the Thailand Pass / QR code on your phone) as this made it easy for the airline check in,  as well.  Then through immigration ( just passport and ticket), then collect luggage as usual. Finally just walk out the doors to that unmistakable heat, humidity, sights and sounds that let you know you've arrived  once again to begin your new adventure.
