More planes might be detouring through Thailand’s airspace as a result of Russia closing its skies to airlines from “hostile” nations, after an overwhelming majority of nations condemned its invasion of Ukraine at the UN General Assembly last month. The nation’s Ministry of Transportation has called for the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, or Aerothai, to draw up a contingency plan, in preparation for a potential increase in air traffic through Thai airspace, as the international flights of some airlines are being forced to take long detours to avoid flying over Russian territory. The order was issued at the International Civil […]

Wont happen, like most government ministries they dream ways of taking money off foreign companies and people. If you look at the new flight routings for example London & Helsinki to Tokyo they are taking the polar route skirting Russian airspace and going over Alaska, Canada & Greenland to Europe. Why detour south and refuel in Thailand? Poor sad old Thailand decays a bit more in its ambitions & hubs.

What do you think, which route has bigger potential, to pick up some travellers "along the way"? Flying from Europe  via Alaska or Bangkok?

There is a reason, for major European Airlines, on the way to Japan, the Philippines, to fly often to Bangkok first. For US-Airlines, however ....!

I think it depends if you can pick up travellers in BKK. If you fly London to Tokyo and you have to detour via BKK, then the question is if you can pick up extra passengers in BKK, as you will use a lot more fuel than via the Arctic, and the stop must be worthwile moneywise.

Seeing how flights to Japan from Europe are premium heavy ie business class & first, direct over the arctic for sure. Thailand is a low yielding market, would it make sense to pay landing fees, fly a more indirect route  and upset premium for a few tourists? There is more than enough capacity from Europe to Thailand, direct or indirect, LH,EK, QR, OS, AF, KL, TK etc.

I still don't see that, with Alaska from europe. If they need it quick, they fly , like AF, just south of the Russian Airspace. China is still open. If they can't fill direct flights to Japan for sure, they try to create a usefull triangle,  to catch more passengers. They did that even before this crisis. And since Covid makes traveling not easier, I can't really see that changing. Also even with business paying a lot more, the sardines in coach are paying most flights. Or why do we see so few planes with just business or 1. and business?

A straight line on a map is not the shortest way, except with the flat earth society.

the greatcircle (orthodrome) is the shortest route between 2 points, and is used on transocean flying and sailing

But selling and offering flights is not always about the shortest way, it is mostly about not to lose money.. And who is using, in google earth times, still flat maps?

How about this, I "give" you AF275 from some days ago, flightaware,  Paris-Tokyo , and you "give" me some other direct flight, from europe to Japan, but Alaska on the path?
