So Will was actually laughing at first but then turned all rage once he saw Jada rolling her eyes at the joke obviously displeased with it. Just a  from Jada can make Will go up the stage on live TV on the biggest movie award show and slap Chris Rock.

Imagine if Jada did the throat slit gesture instead, Chris would have been instantly inducted into the "In Memoriam" segment that night!

He should have stuck to his guns and\ waited for an apology from Rock and then reciprocated, but of course, the morally outraged brigade got to him. Protecting your family is one of your prime responsibilities.  Okay, he could have handled it differently, but he didn't.  One other thing, Chris Rock is no Ricky Gervase, he can't carry it off.

The funny thing here is that Smith was laughing at the joke - then the serial cheating wife Jada shot him a look that could kill and that’s what got him out of his seat. Good feigned anger though. Kept the wife happy.

I believe the entire incident was an elaborate publicity stunt.  If you notice, the sound accompanying the slap was a thud as opposed to a slapping sound.  Current prices of tix to Cris Rock's has risen from 49$ to  a couple of hundred since the stunt as well as a slightly renewed interest in the Academy awards. According to California law that was concidered felony assault.
