According to a Bloomberg report, the 4-day lockdown starts today, in neighbourhoods east of the Huangpu River, including the financial district and industrial parks. That's what you can do when you live in a slave State.  They have already managed to screw up Hong Kong with Covid restrictions, Now its their own financial Cities they are subjugating. Personally, for me, they can stay locked up behind their borders for years, or until they see sense and become useful members of the international community, but it won't happen.

I think it’s great news, long may it last. I hope the Chinese stick with their zero Covid policy for the next 50 years. They are either demonstrating that they know something about this China virus they released that others don’t. Or they have learned nothing and think zero Covid is achievable without destroying their economy. Which is it?

zero-Covid status.

Fortunately, Thailand has given up that madness, although they still haven't reached full sanity yet.

They shouldn't even be in Hong Kong and restricting them as slaves to the CCP. Well at least not yet. What next? Are they going to say at least it is better later than never and suprise tell us that 2 of their Chinese bats got together by mistake in a Shanghai pet shop and created a new more deadlier virus, and oops so sorry it has already left the mainland and is in all the western countries already? Nothing the CCP says you can believe.

Of course they know something, but to play down my anti CCP rant, most goverments have dirty laundry. Let's just hope they are doing protective maintenance and it isn't a new more deadly virus ready to swing out into and crush the world.

Could be neither.  The virus was released by an animal (bat/pangolin) as other corona-viruses have.

They are communist, so when gov. says everyone shut down for practice, they simply follow.

Unknown about the Chinese economy, GDP growth 5.5% in 2022, U.S. was 5.7% in 2021

Not sure about that. But overall, it is just the Chinese regime's way to deal with Chinese life by controlling EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. They do with covid what they simply do with everything.

These shut downs are playing hell with their economy. It will speed up the  inevitable demise of global supply lines. Companies have been moving out to China since before Covid, it’s only accelerated since. Many are moving to SE Asia where labor costs are lower.

I think it’s source is still up for debate. Even if it was animal to human transmission, the Chinese authorities were aware of it many weeks or months before informing the global healthcare community.

As for the growth figures, yes time will tell. It’s difficult for a fully developed economy like the US to reach double digit growth like China has achieved and may well achieve again in the future. They won’t if they keep on dealing with small Covid outbreaks as they are doing.

The other thought of course is that they know most of their population are vaccinated with Chinese vaccines and hence much more vulnerable to any strain of Covid.

You can’t compare the GDP level of a developing nation with that of one who is fully developed. Apples and oranges. That’s without even discussing the validity of Chinese economic numbers (or in this case a projection).
