Russia knew the Azov battalions, among others, were ready to invade the breakaway regions. They got in first. Now 40k Ukrainian troop are surrounded.

Ukraine has roughly 50/50 of its people supporting either the Ukraine or Russian side. The vast majority of the Russian sympathisers are in the south and east.

I'm sure that posters on this thread know all about the Nazi Azov Battalions. These neo-Nazis, - and in many instances actual Nazis - have a stranglehold on the military and government. I think Zelensky is scared of their influence and power.  A rock rolling down a steep hill. Who to stop them? And he is probably secretly thankful that  a thousand of them have surrenderd. What he wants is to escape alive to enjoy his suspicious millions; IMO. Haven't heard him say that; but that's what I believe. He just wants out.

To claim Ukraine is a den of Nazis is an exaggeration. For sure, many of the Azov knuckle draggers were/are proper neo Nazis but I choose to believe they were more of a historical and perhaps necessary evil than an actively encouraged or promoted ideology. Who would you send to fight at Donbas and protect the area near Crimea? I would send the expendable ones (Azov) and keep my other troops close at hand. Sometimes I wonder if Zelenskky deliberately left the Azov regiment to get hammered in Mariupol and also dragged his heels in ordering their surrender to rid himself of them. We may never know.

I am embarrassed as I know better but acknowledge my error - a pity you can't do the same with your maps!

However, US LNG export volumes are decreasing now due to refinery work after winter and about 40% of US natgas exports only go to Mexico or Canada. via pipeline. I can't find recent numbers but the US cannot be the No.2 gas exporter at the moment.

You're not doing yourself any favors Snapdragon slagging the beeb off when you see reporters with film crews filming what's going on. Are you saying this is false fake news? We have Neo Nazis in the UK too called National Action so I'd be looking at closer to home instead of deflecting the war in Ukraine.

If you had bothered to read my initial reply to vlad it contains a link to an article where soldiers are charged and convicted in a civil court and later exchanged - the scenario is actually worse than this case. Zelenskyy and Putin have previously  issued pardons and swapped prisoners. It will happen again after the noise dies down.
