OPINION “Hopefully, and essentially, there has to be a radical Thailand Pass-ectomy.” July 1 seems so far away as the rest of the world has moved on and opened up, with many SE Asian destinations also dispensing with many of their Covid-arrival procedures already, or in the next month. Whilst the rest of the world has established new travel lanes and travel bubbles, Thailand remains in a time bubble, stuck mid-2021 in a pre-Omicron world of curfews, restrictions and incoming travellers treated like extras in The Andromeda Strain (a 1971 sci-fi B-grade movie about a viral pandemic). Travellers arriving in […]

A great article. Says it all.

The Thai Government have not only scared the bejesus out of the population, they also managed to scare themselves. Either that and more likely the scenario, they want an excuse for tight social control until at least a point where they can coast in to the next election.

Today in Thailand, there were another official 24,592 Covid infections reported in the past 24 hours and 68 Covid-related deaths. There will also be 40,000+ unofficial results from positive ATK test, if the numbers follow the trends from the past few weeks.

Why aren’t these numbers being added together? Seems like the govt is hiding something…

PCR testing capabilities in Thailand are limited, there will never be more than 25/30,000 cases per day.

Everything is fine ?

you can come, it's safe, WE control the virus !

Why wait until July 1st? There is already a VLT-lane in place for vaccinated visitors from India. This should be extended to all vaccinated passengers from everywhere - a.s.a.p.

The Thailand pass is here to stay permanently.

The associated testing requirements will be dropped in time but the rest of it is just going to become a replacement for the immigration and quarantine cards that you used to fill out on the plane before you entered the country along with your vaccination records. This sort of thing is being introduced by countries all over the world not just Thailand. Covid is here to stay and it will be here for the next 40+ years. Covid is not over either and it may yet kill us all, their is no reason why a new variant that kills 90%+ of people that catch it won't arise and be vaccine resistant and even more contagious than measles. It's not likely but it's extremely possible. The thing about it is if it happens there ain't a dam thing we can do about it so we just have to get on with our lives and find a balance between caution and living. Right now too many people think that we need to get back to the way it was before, if we do that then we guarantee that if something bad evolves we all die. So we need to find a middle ground to give us a chance.

What countries are these then?

Because generally more and more places are dropping any restrictions.

Where I live just dropped the PCR requirement. Now I need to do absolutely nothing before arrival.

Thailand has waited too long and now there’s the prospects for a global recession due to exploding oil prices. Test & Go 2.0 has been a disaster for arrivals.

How many cases has TP and Test & Go prevented?

Europeans and Americans start booking their fall and winter travel NOW! It’s time to end all the red tape that has done nothing to prevent infections.

You could well be right Tim. However, I’m sure the Thais will hang on to both. Nothing like a piece of paper and a stamp to make you feel important. It’s also worth remembering that it wasn’t that long ago we were all celebrating the talk of the end of the COE. Look what happened. Replaced with virtually the same document simply rebadged. No doubt the Thai government will say they are scrapping the unpopular Thailand Pass and replacing it with “Thailand welcomes you pass”

No doubt it will be renamed in response to the bad press about it but it is here to stay. I the hard copy requirement is going to disappear. They like qr codes now and having your information on the computer screen to call up at immigration on the way into the country. They still get to exercise their personal power.

No we don't have to continue being fearful of living. What we need is to move on with life. What is happening in some countries is not going to be the norm. It is unacceptable and shouldn't be talked about as a normal thing. What this new system amounts to is total power and control possessed by a tiny "elite", and way less freedom for the regular people.

It's time for those people who are scared of living to continue  doing what they want to do about that without constantly telling the rest of us how to live. Too many people are pushing an elitist agenda that is not in their favor, nor in the favor of humanity as a whole.

We all die, mostly of terrible stuff, remember? There's just no shortness of horror. So at least be free and enjoy life while it lasts.

Europe won't be doing any of this rubbish.

Ditto North America.

I'm based in the Gulf; KSA, UAE, Bahrain are pretty much come on in.

Countries hanging on to this stuff are going to be in the minority pretty soon.
