According to Thai PBS World, the name “Bangkok” has been in use since November 2001 and came from an old area of the capital now known as Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai.

"Bangkok" has been in use a long time before 2001.
Maybe it was only foreigners that tended to use the name before then?

Maybe Murray Head traveled from the future in 2001 to 1984 just to release One Night in Bangkok?
Also isn’t the play that shall not be mentioned in Bangkok?

Perhaps they are talking about the official English version. Because the official Thai version is already written Krung Thep.

The Thai government has introduced new regulations that require those who apply for Thai citizenship to pass a new Thai language test.

‘This is the first word in the test …… starting simple, before working up to the harder words.’

Aotearoa/New Zealand's gone thru a renaming of public names, Govt departments etc and I can barely comprehend news items which read like " the victim's whanau held a tangi at Whenuapai ...."
