300 Baht is about the best you'll get around here. 492 is gonna kick the locals in the ass and you'll be seeing more Cambodians working on the land. Such is life.

if they want to help out those working for minimum wage, they could always stop devaluating their currency.  the problem isnt how much they are making, the problem the value of what they are making.

This is good news. Combined with tight borders and efforts to reduce cash paid jobs it will hopefully improve the lives of working people.

That’s the problem when it’s cheaper to bring in foreign labour. It happens everywhere and with cheap labour right next door, this could backfire. Well intended I’m sure.

How can it be "good news"?

Those who are employing people legally and paying them minimum wage, so giving them Social Security benefits such as pensions, additional medical and parental allowances, sick leave, maternity leave and allowances, redundancy payments, etc, won't want to see their wage bill go up by nearly 60% so they'll either cut down on the number employed putting many out of a job, employ them unregistered so they won't get any Social Security protection or benefits, or charge them deductions from their salaries for meals or transport so they'll end up with less money in their pockets!

It's a proposal that's totally out of touch with reality.

Yes, that argument is used to oppose minimum wage increases even here in my country, far from Thailand.

I welcome improvements in the living conditions of Thai (and all) people. I think this will help.

As I thought I asked - how?

Unless you think people are helped by losing their job or their Social Security coverage ... 😂.

Here's the US version of the debate. For American, substitute "Thai" or other nationality:
