Several government agencies are collaborating on a new initiative to assist children who have dropped out of school to return and complete their education. At the project’s launch ceremony yesterday, Thailand’s Education Minister and heads of related agencies signed a memorandum of understanding for the project. Education ministry records have recorded 238,707 child dropouts in Thailand. Reasons for dropping out often involve financial and personal issues. Announcements like this always come with a high degree of scepticism. If it were actually true and properly funded, it's a huge investment in the future for Thailand's young people. They drop out for many reasons; money being top of the list, closely followed by having to get jobs to support the family. Some just dropped out because they weren't mature enough to continue (more often the boys). But I'm glad to see it at least being proposed.
