We are all only “visitors” to this life .

Fit & Healthy so far and working on it.

Still plan to work on overseas projects.

Stopped enjoying the Covid retirement.

Will not be returning to a bleak country  to receive a few more low quality years connected to life support machines in a crap climate which will also try to kill me over a few freezing winters…. with family there watching me die….

Will have high quality life or no life. Option perhaps to check in to CM care home to see out final years here on pain relief, if it comes to that.

Have essentially provided for all my family by “ living will” launching them financially during my lifetime. House Deposits, University, Cars etc. UK Assets long since sold or transferred.
They’ve been told that’s it. Thai Assets all to my lady and kid here. Who are already made financially independent & secure.

Great, you have made a lot of Thais very happy.

Bleak?

The climate here in the UK is great, we have nice seasons to enjoy, very mild winters and we have such things as jackets to go walking in in the very mild winters, things you may have come across called radiators in the house and cars keep us warm.

I know lots of Thais living here who like the weather as they say if you have to work and travel to work in Thailand it is too hot, but it is a good place to visit if no work is involved.

I meet a lot of farangs living in Thailand who seem to gloat as they are there and mention the winters in the UK, they don't seem to realise we live here by choice too. Thailand is Ok for long holidays.

But we are not Thai and will never be accepted fully in Thailand as far as I can see, get your money out and you are made very very welcome.

Try taking your money away and you will soon see what they think of you as I have seen on so many occasions there.

I live in the South East and the weather is great, it is bit crap up t'north and Scotland etc though so if I was forced to live there then maybe Thailand in comparison is great.

The last time I looked there was lots of sun, even today in winter it is very sunny outside, I wonder how all the trees, plants and other vegetation grows with out the sun?

Prompting me to visit (world class) Red Mountain / Canyon Clubhouse to check out terms and members. What’s the best day / time for that for best social recon? Living on and off / semi retired on Kata Hill bordering Rawai / Chalong since 2008. Patong before that since 2004.

You can play Red Mountain whenever you want. As it is so expensive nearly nobody plays it. Greenfee 6000. If you play with a member of Loch Palm you will get 1000 Baht discount.
Ad to that the compulsary golf cart (700) without which you can't play, caddy fee and caddy tip.

Central Restaurants mostly Open. Sizzler Weekend Salad Buffet my favorite. Bangla quite lively with no Covid enforcement.Live Rock Music at Red Hot & New York my favorite. No Nightclubs or Pole Dancing yet.Patong to Rawai IS Very Busy with Sandbox Tourists. Central also.

Phuket Town great choice for quiet traditional non -beach stay.Campus Roaster coffee shop,at Museum end Thalang Road, must be best in Phuket . Try BeerSound for live music with dinner, at other end Thalang Road (then turn right).Blue Elephant, gourmet Thai cuisine, a strong must for dinner …….

For the moment I prefer the restaurants in Kathu. 9th Floor in Patong was a bit expensive but the best. In Kathu Cassita Rossa is a good Italian, also pizza, Tong Dee good Western kitchen with also some Thai food, Sunday roast.
Tung Tong (big chicken) good and cheap Thai and Issan food. For seafood the best is Kan Eang @ Pier. In Patong I always go to Savoey as they know me for nearly 30 years.

I agree 100% about the weather

I think a lot of expats try and convince themselves and others that the weather in Thailand is great

Yet they are constantly trying to find AC and shade   😀

The weather in Thailand sucks mostly!

All this thread is, is like every Thai fourm

Every guy bragging on their own personal situation and why what they do is better than what others do

I only see this in Thailand and no other expat community

I don't see it with Latin American expats

It just comes off as a bunch of insecure off men trying to convince each other they did it best, IMO

People might have shifted their entertainment patterns voluntarily or involuntarily due to many factors.

But definitely a good data point...

Still a long, long way to go to real recovery (for the economy, as opposed to any Bangla Road refugees😆).

Glass half full might be more useful than glass half empty at this point...

We might want to cheer *any* improvement :-)

I was watching YT video of Phuket "recovery" and vlogger was in empty hotel saying "it's so great it's not empty anymore" :-D (supposedly about to open for lunch but the visuals didn't agree with the dialogue).

If the Thai government is focusing on better tourism over volume (and that's great news for impacts on beaches and parks, etc) it won't possibly "feel busy" like it used to - maybe never?

Fewer random tourists everywhere mean Taxi drivers will not feel busy, like your friend, until the bloated taxi market adapts to the new (smaller) market.

Did what best? Well, whatever it is, I can assure you, I do it best. And I'll tell you why as soon as I come back from my "Insecure Ex-Pats Anonymous 12 step meeting".  There's some new Latin guys there who haven't got a clue.

Read the thread

Read any thread on any Thai forum

Every guy is telling others how what they are doing in Thailand is the right way and everyone else is wrong

There was one quote in this thread

Which is about entertainment in Phuket

Some insecure old guy felt the need to say he stays at home with his "educated wife "

Other than the weird ass expat Thai world, do you not realize how utterly ridiculous that statement is to make, how it was made, in that context?

Really Marc, every guy?

But then what can you expect from - as you said a couple of weeks ago, a cesspit forum?

I have no opinions about a man and his wife. He may say what he likes. That's his business between him and his wife.

His wife can deal with him privately for his public behavior ;-)

It may be ridiculous or weird, but it's not my business to get involved with, any more than how he raises his kids, or any other personal family matter.

If Thailand has customs, traditions, food, laws, or superstitions I don't agree with, or think are ridiculous or weird, I don't feel it's right for me to say so.

Thailand's people and culture deserve respect, I think.

This can be very commonplace among Asia expat communities and their respective thematic forums.

The comparatives and boasting tends to be a way of life.

There are positives in this forum, just ignore those boasting. People who boast are just insecure.

I was in Bangla Rd last night following the reopening of the Dublin Irish Bar, but didn't stay long. The lack of live music was the deal-breaker for me.

Plenty of people around, but without live music it reminds me of Soi7 Pattaya, where it is all about who has the loudest sound-system.

It is still temporary as all the farangs I know who were approaching 80 years old had to go back to their own country as they needed long term medical care which most 'retirees' can not afford to pay in Thailand, people for some reason think they are going to be fit and healthy forever.

You said, "Since Thais consider you are rich understand you'll be the one expected to pay.", who told you that? I have never been expected to pay, we (Thais and farangs) all have turns at paying generally at restaurants etc, not all Thais are poor and are scroungers you know.

You fell for that one it seems, so funny, get your wallet out farang. 😂

Well to do Thais expect to pay. They accept it. Splitting the bill is a western thing. Of course there are situations that might be exceptions but I expect to pay unless with a well off Thai friend. Often at restaurant a senior Thai or their spouse will disappear during the meal and settle the bill so as not giving you a chance to offer to pay. I personally feel bad if I asked friend to go out to eat and they insist on paying, but I've learned to accept it. We find other ways to show gratitude.

I agree with that for the most part

And by the way, that occurs in most countries and cultures

But, and just like any country, people take advantage and some aren't appreciative as well

My wife pays for most things for her family, as I do as well for my family

But there are times, in normal settings where a couple of her brothers will expect her to pay for trivial shit like gas, that bite her ass

I have 6 nephew's, all in their 20's

I'm paying for them when we are out 90% of the time

I want to and it's my pleasure

But they often have not said Thank You

Over Xmas they came over to our hotel

I spent 250usd on takeout

I shouldn't have to remind someone in their 20's to say thank you

Another one....

My wife helps our her Aunt, not with huge money but money here and there. Plus we've given good sums of money to her daughter for tuition and such

Her Aunt sent her a "joking" text or it may have been a call, that my wife forgot to give her a New Year's gift of money

Why do that? It made my wife feel bad, towards a person she is happy to help out

What kind of live music did it have?

Actually I think there is fantastic live music all over Thailand

From English cover bands, Thai cover bands and original bands

The "big" town we go to near my wife's village, Singburi

Has all kinds of great open air pubs with live music

All the Pattaya standards for old gits like me such as "California, I want to drink free, Have you ever seen the rain, Alice, Sultans of Swing, Stairway to Heaven".

That was the appeal of Pattaya for me: Pretty girl on my arm. Drink in my spare hand. Music from the 60's and 70's, and suddenly I felt like I was 20 something again.

I hate to admit that I find most cover bands slightly unpleasant. Not only do they cover slightly dreadful songs they do so less than perfectly.

I would rather listen to a recorded jazz session than some live bands doing a cover of "freebird" or "hotel California".

But agreed on over amplified music being a turn off - live or recorded.
