  1. A group of female police officers heroically intervened to save a Thai woman Heroic, was it? Did they place their lives on the line? Were they or anyone else endangered? Or did they just separate a drunken man from a woman he shouldn't have treated like he did? Heroic? It was was their job and they did it well but it wasn't heroic.

  3. The public is being bullied and woman and girls are sexually abused in the name of Songkran. For sure every decent family will stay away from such hooligans. When they submit Songkran to be considered as an heritage festival to UNESCO, they failed to inclued this sexual abuse and violence as part of the current Songkran culture. If they had done it, then it would be perfect to reflect the exact current situation. No point in grumbling now. Let all the shop and business owners go after and whack those who are turning a peaceful and enjoyable Songkran into a chaotic and violent event. If one person is whacked by 100 people, then the charges are not severe. No point in waiting for law and enforcement to take its path. Sometimes such incidents need instant act to nip in the bud.

  4. This from almost 2 years ago. Don't you ever look at the date the article is published? Oh, that's right. Comment on everything as if you're omniscient and don't need to actually read the article. Got it.
    3 points
  5. The “comments”, not so much the article itself, are interesting. From meatheads who thinks Thailand (or any country for that matter) should welcome drug users in the hopes of boosting their economy is ridiculous. The country’s attempt to boost the economy thru legalization of marijuana was a major mistake. Take a look at the US states that legalize MJ. Racked with homelessness, crime, property destruction and depreciation, and mounting local government debt. Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, LA, Philadelphia, New York, just to name a few.

  7. I guess it all depends on the village I don't think I would enjoy a remote village than isn't that nice of an area My wife's village is gorgeous, spread out but only have to drive 15-20-25mins to be in bigger area with restaurants/bars And it's also only 1hr35mins from BKK So not an arduous drive to get there My friend now is in the farthest northern part of Issan...... Don't think I could do that

  8. I stopped visiting the village pre Covid and I doubt that I will ever go back, even though 'we own' 4 farms in that area. Modern technology means that my input to that business, small though it is, can be provided at a distance. I welcome the family to visit us at our main home, but my days of, frankly, 'enduring' a few days in a remote village setting are over.

  9. I think common sense should prevail, millions of people throwing water about, and so someone is going to get water where they don't want it to be and as some people are miseries then some negative reactions will happen. It is a bit like bonfire night in the UK on the 5th of November every year, with millions of fireworks being set off someone is bound to be injured. But I agree about the village mentality, that applies all around the world, people living in backward villages will tend to be less intelligent and dim as the people with get-up-and-go will have left. I avoid staying in villages, especially in Thailand.

  10. It happens frequently at SK. Locals frequently target farangs to get a rise out of them. The obvious lesson is, if you don't want to be subjected to it, stay away.

  13. Plant based meat tastes quite good, but I wouldn’t go as far as to it’s a healthy alternative to meat. Red meat has been linked to certain cancers, however salt has been linked to cardiovascular disease and plant based meet is loaded with salt. So it’s not really that healthy.

  17. The debt trap diplomacy that you allude to here has been debunked as a myth. If China are guilty of anything, it is an absence of oversight of their creditor countries. Both in the feasibility of of the projects and the capacity of the borrower to service its debt. In the cases where the project has not been profitable, it’s notable China has resisted debt to equity exchange and have opted for renegotiations. As an aside the countries that have defaulted on their loans (Zambia, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and Ghana) took out those loans via institutions not aligned to BRI. These were arranged through shorter term private equity funds backed by Wall Street, with more onerous conditions. As the citizenry of the borrower south are aware, the onus for the failed projects that have occurred where BRI has been involved, falls with the incompetent and/or corrupt government officials charged with negotiating the terms of the loan and not with the Chinese lenders. The following research paper provides a comprehensive insight into several relevant projects regarding debt trap diplomacy; https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19480881.2023.2195280

  18. I am not as discouraged as some people are by China's activity. They have every right to do this. On the contrary, the more China chases after these countries, the more likely China will get dinged. https://apnews.com/article/china-debt-banking-loans-financial-developing-countries-collapse-8df6f9fac3e1e758d0e6d8d5dfbd3ed6 A dozen poor countries are facing economic instability and even collapse under the weight of hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign loans, much of them from the world’s biggest and most unforgiving government lender, China. An Associated Press analysis of a dozen countries most indebted to China — including Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, Laos and Mongolia Ever notice that when the social activists demand debt relief for poor countries, they never make the demand to China, and China has the most onerous and unforgiving of debt agreements. At some point, these client states will default and China can take a haircut. Best of all China pushed in to become one of Africa's biggest creditors. Now China is finding out how difficult it is to collect from some countries. https://www.lemonde.fr/en/economy/article/2024/01/12/the-new-face-of-chinafrica-is-marked-by-a-dramatic-drop-in-lending-to-the-continent_6427213_19.html The west is looking better and better. Maybe Russia can step in and back some of these countries.

  23. I'll say it again. China is NOT Thailand's friend and never will be. They are just a future colonial power. Srettha seems so intent on his relying on "Big Brother China" that he, along with many others only looking to fill their wallets, have neglected to see that China historically is expanding its physical territory. This Road and Belt Initiative, and the subsequent high speed rail through this country is nothing more than future infrastructure for a physical invasion of Chinese nationals, by military force, if needed.

  24. Marc one thing you learn about living here is don't argue with the locals there's no winning and to be honest you won't get much dramas from them they're very easy folk to live with compared to other Falang . And I do admire them because even if they don't know their fellow Thai's they standby them unlike Foreigners in Western Countries that seem to think they're entitled.

  25. I can only talk for Pattaya where it's still going on but even though smaller in numbers there's been zero control from the authorities this year much to the dismay of the business owners I've talked to bet 7/11 & Topps made a mint mind you. Songkran never fails to bring in those quality tourists (The Chav's of the World). On a brighter note you've got to feel sorry for them they missed the chance to see this amazing Country in normal times and wasted their money coming here during Songkran.

  26. So a guy isn't supposed to object to some assh*le likely intentionally screwing with him??
    2 points
  27. Exactly. Songkran is a time of year, when nasty elements come out to take advantage of the "festival" to attack and harass people . There is a time and a place for water splashing. And no, attacking people with a water pistol is not Thai culture. It is lower class thug culture. We have the assailant's version of events, most likely dressed up to cover up the nastiness and ill intent. The guy intentionally sprayed his coffee. I'd have been angry too. Whatever the facts may be, it is a waste of time to argue with such people and it is best to stay away. Unfortunately, many people are forced to work during Songkran and the constant barrage of water can be depressing. My friend's sister works at a large Thai hospital. All leave is cancelled during Songkran and she works a longer shift because of all the injuries that come in. She can't stand getting doused on her way to work or when she is leaving. She's tired and just wants to go home and to sleep.

  28. How can say that when you don't know exactly what happened? I've been going to my wife's village for close to 20yrs And there has been a number of times that we've been fukcked with by locals Some of these local Thai guys can be assh*les And I wouldn't put it past them to intentionally douse his coffee with water

  29. And the next step is to link the digital ID to a centralized digital currency system that will penalize people buying or selling what the system controllers deem necessary, regardless of whether the people want or need the products. And when that happens, cash and other forms of exchange will be banned. You will be able to have what you are allowed to have and if you try to get more, your money will be confiscated and you will be left to die.

  30. Well it's illegal so it shouldn't be too hard to confiscate a load of them.

  31. I have neither deflected nor obfuscated. You misrepresented my statement and I corrected you. The fact is that you frequently spit out nazi and hitler. No need to change the wiki page. it states exactly what I wrote. Israel is not mimicing Iran or Hezbollah. As I have explained, if Israel did indeed target the building, it was a legitimate military target because; 1. Syria, Hezbollah and iran are engaged in hostile military actions against Israel. 2. The building is located in a nation that is in a state of war with Israel and was occupied by parties engaged in hostile military action against Israel. This was not a neutral third party occupancy, but a direct military use by entities who have declared hostile military action on Israel. 3. The building did not enjoy protection because the parties hosting, controlling and using the location were in a state of hostile military action against Israel.

  32. No-one is denying that there are valid reasons. People are rightly concerned with the ease of access and lack of accountability for these “gender clarifications”. There must be increased scrutiny and a more thorough vetting process for these life altering procedures. This report should be welcomed for the wake up it is, not dismissed as transphobic messaging. There is a middle ground in all this and we need to find it for the sake of the children.

  34. What is there to follow. Phuket has been sold to foreigners on piece meal basis. Now most of the business circles are under their radar. So it is time either the locals follow the foreigners law or just leave Phuket. Nothing can be done as long as every single foreigner is kicked out of Phuket irrespective of their business connections and investments.

Here's a little teaser::: Bill Nicholson was offered the position as Spurs manager on the morning of October 11th, 1958. That very day, in the top flight English League, Everton (blue half of Liverpool) were the visitors to White Hart lane. Plenty of goals. 6-1 at the HT break. What was the score at the final whistle? a/ 6-6 b/ 10-4 c/ 8-3 d/ 12-1 An incredible match for sure.

  44. After 12 years here in Pattaya top tip to this bloke don't argue with the locals during Songkran It's annoying getting soaked with sewerage water but you're not going to come out better of arguing with Thai folk it's only 3 days a year 9 if you're in Pattaya stay inside between 12 to 7 pm. After that head out and there's plenty of Falang Chav's to spark out and he'd get away with it.
