A group of female police officers heroically intervened to save a Thai woman Heroic, was it? Did they place their lives on the line? Were they or anyone else endangered? Or did they just separate a drunken man from a woman he shouldn't have treated like he did? Heroic? It was was their job and they did it well but it wasn't heroic.5 points

Here's an idea, The beloved big brother, PRC, are happy, to trade cadmium waste for money, so why not just GIVE it to them. Instead of storing it in Thailand, how about delivering it, free of charge, over the border to them? The Chinese have no regard for anyone other than themselves (and profit, of course), so they should be happy with that plan. Also... "Liu Lu, a Chinese factory owner in Chon Buri"... Doesn't this come under the guise of 'employment'? Another case of little brown envelope to make regulations go away?5 points

MFP isn't risking dissolution, they are at risk of dissolution. Yet another ploy by the establishment to cut any possible and reasonable difference for the country's citizens. It's not the first time in recent memory, nor does it look like it's going to change. Many Thais I know are frustrated and sad about the situation but also feel helpless because they feel powerless, regardless of how they vote or what they say they want.5 points

You gotta laugh at the coppers sometimes. Duncan Burrage, NCA International Liaison Officer in Thailand, remarked he was delighted the police finally tracked down the pervert, reported The Daily Mail. “Through utilising our international network and closely collaborating with Cheshire Police colleagues, we have successfully located a fugitive wanted in connection with extremely serious allegations. This arrest underscores law enforcement’s steadfast commitment to pursue those awaiting justice in the UK.” Really? He wasn't tracked down, at all. He was gone for 27 years and he was only caught because he returned to the UK and obviously his name was flagged. That same name on his passport which must have been renewed by the UK government several times in those 27 years. Sounds like Mr. Burrage, wasn't really on the ball.5 points

I wonder how many Thais were arrested for drunk driving yesterday. Last year, at about this time, the Bangkok Post reported, "In 2022, 15,609 people were found guilty of drunk driving" Just doing a little math, that averages to nearly 43 people a day. Pretty sure most of them weren't foreigners, like this guy. But let a farang get caught, and let's stop the presses! https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2547344/court-warns-on-drink-driving © Bangkok Post PCL. All rights reserved.5 points

Why do Thai people act suicidal and poison the country and people just to make a buck? Cadmium is extremely toxic-both mutagenic and carcinogenic-and there is NO biological use of it. So why produce such a dangerous commercial byproduct with no actual plan for safe disposal? Just like the importation of plastic waste-it makes no sense. Is poisoning the community worth making a few baht?4 points

Bit slow with this story the Russian mafia have been excerting influence and money laundering in Thailand for decades, of course it stepped up with the big influx of young Russian draft dodgers when Putins war with Ukraine started. Thailand is the perfect place for all organised crime with a completely corrupt police force and institutional corruption at both local and national government level. Coupled with a Government that only ever sees Roubles/Dollars/Euro's/Pounds/Yuan and disregards any moral or ethical reasoning in favour of currency.4 points

Hmm I hope there will be some sort of checks on what the money will be used for otherwise I can just see people becoming saddled with a debt they are unable to pay having spent it unwisely to 'gain face' with their peers.4 points

Geez, was there anyone that didn't see this coming? As soon as they decided to grab that brass ruble by letting in Russians indiscriminately after Ukraine was invaded, there were several of us that said this was a bad idea. And for this very reason.4 points

It's often the case. Someone does something reprehensible and it has to be a foreigner. Can't be a Thai. The only country I've lived in where this sort of mentality was even worse was South Korea, because they are insular as hell. I understand the Chinese are much like this, as well. "Can't be one of us. We are the princes of the Earth. Must be a foreign devil!"4 points

Just today on Thaiger I've seen America blamed for: ISIS, AL-Qaeda, 9/11, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and now prostitution in Thailand. It's incredible what a simplified view of the world one can have, especially if one has a predisposition to dislike some people and also disdains nuance, facts, etc. But I guess we're all guilty of some version of that.4 points

The public is being bullied and woman and girls are sexually abused in the name of Songkran. For sure every decent family will stay away from such hooligans. When they submit Songkran to be considered as an heritage festival to UNESCO, they failed to inclued this sexual abuse and violence as part of the current Songkran culture. If they had done it, then it would be perfect to reflect the exact current situation. No point in grumbling now. Let all the shop and business owners go after and whack those who are turning a peaceful and enjoyable Songkran into a chaotic and violent event. If one person is whacked by 100 people, then the charges are not severe. No point in waiting for law and enforcement to take its path. Sometimes such incidents need instant act to nip in the bud.3 points

No-one is denying that there are valid reasons. People are rightly concerned with the ease of access and lack of accountability for these “gender clarifications”. There must be increased scrutiny and a more thorough vetting process for these life altering procedures. This report should be welcomed for the wake up it is, not dismissed as transphobic messaging. There is a middle ground in all this and we need to find it for the sake of the children.3 points

https://news.sky.com/story/new-coal-plants-in-china-soar-despite-president-xis-pledge-to-strictly-control-dirtiest-fuel-13112101 One more example, among many, of what I was saying above. You are being sold a pup, just to make China look good, if only among those people stupid enough, or naïve enough , to swallow their propaganda..3 points

This was the top news on Thai TV last night. The reason? Cadmium is highly toxic and a proven top carcinogenic. The CIB was present (Central Investigation Bureau), which means criminal charges may be filed. But I wonder what they'll do with these "Chinese investors". After all, this may cause a certain loss of face for a certain part of the government.3 points

MFP cannot achieve anything under the current system where the army effectively controls the government no matter what elections try to pretend. The Thai people all know it as does the rest of the world. Sadly I believe ultimately the Thai army by its refusal to give up political power will prompt a civil war.3 points

You're not thinking like a Thai. Pragmatically, here, in most cases the 300k will be squandered in no time and lead to more problems. Very bad idea IMO, but having seen the Thai prime minister visiting Macron recently and having heard the language he uses, it is clear he wants to turn Thailand into a debt-based society.3 points

When I saw the village idiot post the conspiracy theories from his favourite far-right rags, I had a quick look on Google Maps. Disruptive? Yes, but there are plenty of alternate road and rail links that skirt round Baltimore, and it won't take long to clear the water way into the port. A terrorist attack on a strategic link that will cripple the US economy? That is deep into tin foil hat territory.3 points

He surely is concerned about "saving Thailand's economy", yet he hasn't proposed anything about actually benefiting Thais through training or education to make them more competitive in the world It's all "bring someone else's money in", except in this case it will be "bankrupt those with gambling problems". It's not about solving a problem, it's just about skimming in the form of taxes. I am not impressed with this guy. Not a bit.3 points

Not penny pinching and not poor engineering. As the engineering analysts have pointed out, a large vessel as large as the Empire State building crashed into the bridge. When the bridge was built it was in an era of small, slower vessels. There were no super cargo vessels. The common barriers found throughout the world cannot stop a large cargo ship. The vessel had deployed its anchors to slow it down. The bridge was in good shape and bridges are not built to sustain a major impact. Engineers have stated that the common "dolphins" seen around some large bridges would have failed under this type of impact. It was an unfortunate accident. Building super reinforced dolphins are not fiscally viable and would cost $billions. It is not just this bridge, but many critical bridges around the world are just as vulnerable. The economic loss this tragedy will create will be in the. hundreds of millions Of $. Baltimore Port is out of business once it clears what it has in Port and on the stranded vessels. Much of the east coast auto shipments came in from this port and they will be diverted elsewhere. It will be a boon to the railways which will pick up the internal shipping from other ports which are at capacity. 15,000 workers are employed at the port. Many will be jobless. There are several ships stuck in Port and this will cost the shipping companies.3 points

Foreigners didn't take Pattaya and Phuket away, Thailand systematically gave it away by excessively pandering to the foreign tourism market in the quest for maximum profits3 points

I think the point being missed, by a wide margin, here is that while American servicemen might have been the customers that helped create the demand for the modern industry in question, they didn't create that industry. It was created for them by the Thais themselves. Even today, go to Soi Cowboy, Nana, Patong or Pattaya and the vast majority of the businesses that cater to this industry are owned, operated and staffed by Thais and it's Thais that deposit that money in their bank accounts. Thais just took a facet of their culture that was already present and super sized it. And still do.3 points

China housing market is 25% of GDP. It is collapsing. CCP just approved over a trillion Yuan for a bail out. which is about 400 billion dollars short. They have already spent the money paid by investors, or home buyers so the loan will not generate any income. If the housing crises is not fixed it will bring China to its knee's. Home buyers with the cash are not investing in Chinese housing. Thailand and SE Asia in general are the real winners here. And who can blame the Chinese people. The housing crisis has been described as the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of scams. I will be curious to see how this plays out. All US and western money are exiting China just making things worse. Its stock market is in shambles. Xi begging for western money with no takers. Xi has bankrupt China. This will be an interesting storyline handed down 1000's years to come.3 points
