Tha Chin Canal gets a volunteer clean up

by Salinee Prap

Over 200 residents and tourists rolled up their sleeves and joined forces yesterday (Sunday) collecting garbage that has swept into Khlong Tha Chin tambon Rassada of Phuket’s Muang district. Klonh Tha Chin is the waterway that separates Koh Sirae from the rest of Phuket, linked by a 80 m bridge.

The volunteers, including local fishermen and members of the Phuket Red Cross Society, took 38 boats to collect over 2 tonnes of garbage which had been floating in the canal and blocking flow. Most of the accumulated rubbish was plastic and pieces of furniture.

This event was held in the hope that coastal communities, fishermen, tourists and other people will become more aware about pollution and cut down on the garbage they throw away, and where they throw it.
