Ahead of the four-day weekend, Phuket Marine Office Chief Natchaphong Pranit today released a series of safety notices urging boat operators to adhere to safety regulations. These notices come in the wake of an expected influx of tourists visiting Phuket from May 4-7.

Phuket is anticipated to draw significant numbers of visitors due to the Coronation of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, which occurred in May 2019. In addition, the Cabinet approved May 5 as an extra holiday to encourage domestic tourism during this period. Natchaphong Pranit stressed that with an increased number of tourists visiting Phuket’s water attractions and coastal areas, adherence to safety rules is crucial, reported Phuket News.

Among the safety regulations highlighted are the requirements for all boats to be registered and not carry more passengers than allowed. Boat operators should also be mindful not to exceed the safe number of people on piers and pontoons when boarding and disembarking.

Moreover, all operators of piers and boats must ensure that safety equipment, such as life buoys and safety vests, are in working order and sufficient for the number of people on board. Inspections of boat operators and piers began yesterday, with one operator at Chalong Pier arrested for operating a vessel with expired registration.

It is also important to note that boat operators must slow down when passing or overtaking other boats at close range to avoid causing dangerous waves. This rule comes after a recent incident in which a foreign passenger was injured by a speedboat travelling at an estimated 25 knots in the approach to the channel leading to Royal Phuket Marina and Phuket Boat Lagoon.

With the increased tourist influx during the four-day holiday weekend, local officials and boat operators must work together to prioritize safety and avoid any incidents that may impact visitors’ experiences and the reputation of Phuket as a popular tourist destination.
