Valentine’s Day goes to the dogs

THALANG: Valentine’s Day, traditionally reserved for displays of love between humans, will get a canine twist in the Year of the Dog.

On February 14, the Phuket Provincial Livestock Office (PPLO) will stage the official opening of the Mid Road Dog Shelter in a ceremony to be presided over by Phuket Governor Udomsak Uswarangkura.

Dr Wirapab Termkiatpaisarn, head of the PPLO’s Animal Welfare Division, told the Gazette that Valentine’s Day was chosen because it is a day of love and the PPLO wants all pet owners to love their animals.

The day was also special because it falls in the Year of the Dog on the Chinese calendar, he added.

Dr Wirapab added that, even though the shelter has been in operation since June 2004, it was only recently that all construction work was completed at the facility, now home to some 400 dogs.

The PPLO will organize a dog show on the opening day and is encouraging the public to adopt animals at the shelter on that day.

“Anyone who wants a dog can take one from the shelter straight away,” he said.

The exact times of the day’s events have yet to be announced, but the public may call Tel: 076-216934 for more information.
