Security tightened for Loy Krathong

PHUKET: Region 8 Police are working to boost security measures during this year’s Loy Krathong Festival on Monday and are requesting the public to follow rules and regulations for the sake of their own safety.

“We have received an official report stating that everything will return to normal after the 30-day mourning period is over. Therefore, the festival will be held as usual,” said Lt Gen Tesa Siriwato, the new commander of Region 8 Police Headquarters.

Officials say they are strictly enforcing the requirement for all boat captains to possess a valid licence; otherwise they will not be allowed on the water. They are also ensuring that the boats will not carry more people than are legally allowed on board and that captains are not under the influence of any substances.

Additionally, all boats are required to turn their lights on at night, in order to avoid collisions or run-ins with other boats. They also have to reduce their speed in areas where people are celebrating.

“People are requested to be careful and not drive fast on the roads. The public is also requested to use pedestrian bridges or places where traffic police officers are present to help them cross. Drunk driving is strictly prohibited and perpetrators will face a hefty punishment,” said Gen Tesa.

“Firecrackers are strictly prohibited. People are requested not to wear or keep valuables with them on that day.”

Officials are also requesting that people stick to crowded, well-lit areas and avoid visiting isolated places.

“Keep a close eye on your children in order to avoid kidnapping or fraud. Prepare a card with parents’ names and contact information, and put them in your children’s pockets in case they get lost,” said Gen Tesa.

“I urge everyone to please help take care of each other and immediately report to us if you see something suspicious,” he added.

Gen Tesa also requested entertainment venues to arrange ‘appropriate’ activities “that do not clash with Thai values and culture.”
