Recycle and save Phuket

PHUKET TOWN: Schools, community groups and families are being urged to take part in a recycling contest aimed at making the people of Phuket understand the importance of classifying garbage correctly. The concept came from Wipapan Kusuwan, President of the Satree Phuket Former Students Association, who held a press conference at the Pearl Hotel yesterday to highlight the importance of proper recycling. “We need better processing before the environment of Phuket is destroyed,” K. Wipapan warned. He is hoping as many as 6,000 groups will enter the competition. Each group will be required to recycle its own garbage and the winning group will be chosen by a committee. The emphasis will be on teamwork and the contest will run from October 28 to November 10. For more information, call 076-211034. Also today, Phuket Town Mayor Phummisak Hongsyok gave a meeting of the Phuket Municipality at City Hall a first-hand account of his trip to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. Thailand was one of 75 countries represented. The Mayor said local governments had a vital role to play in creating a better world built on sustainable development.
