Phuket tops Dengue fever league

PHUKET TOWN: The Phuket Health Office recorded 148 cases of Dengue fever between the beginning of the year and July 23, said its director, Dr Boonrieng Chuchaisangrat, in a report issued yesterday. There were no deaths. The figure means that with an infection rate of 63.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, Phuket remains at the top of the Dengue fever league table in Thailand. The places worst affected were Tambon Talad Yai, with 33 cases, Tambon Rasada with 21, and Tambon Kathu with 15. At the other end of the scale, Tambon Kamala reported no cases at all during the period. Dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes, so the Provincial Health Office is continuing its campaign to encourage people to rid their surroundings of conditions in which mosquitoes may breed, most notably pools of stagnant water.
