Phuket golf series heating up

PHUKET: The race to become Phuket’s top amateur golfer is beginning to heat up with five qualifying rounds of the Phuket-Times.Com Amateur Open already completed.

There are eight events in total, culminating in the season-ending Master’s Final next year that will determine who will be crowned the island’s best amateur golfer.

Laong Cameron is the current Order of Merit leader, but only holds a slender five point advantage over second placed Tim Gomez with three rounds remaining.

At the most recent fifth round qualifying event, held at the Laguna Phuket Golf Club, Mr Gomez took first place in Division One, ahead of grandmother Ying Phumklang. Lt Col Yongyut Krongmalai finished a respectable third.

In Division 2, Ying’s grandson Payboon Phumklang clinched top spot.

In the fourth qualifier at Red Mountain Golf Club last month, it was a case of keeping it in the family, with Ying claiming top honours and young Payboon finishing third.

The next qualifying round of the Phuket-Times.Com Amateur Golf Open is on January 8 at Loch Palm Golf Club.

Places are still available. Contact Neil Taylor (082-2803486) or Khun Laong (087-856 4426) for more information, or visit phuket-times.com to register.
