Illegal immigration arrests top 200

PHUKET TOWN: Statistics released by the Phuket Provincial Police for the January 1-25 period revealed that illegal immigration again topped the crime figures, with 211 arrests made. Other common crimes were gambling (178 arrests) and possession or use of illegal narcotics (60 arrests). Thirty-eight ya bah (methamphetamine) tables were seized. Prostitution is still a crime in Thailand, and 43 unlucky people were arrested on this charge. Violent crimes included two murders, one case of negligence leading to a death, four cases of attempted murder and two rapes. Nineteen reports of assault led to 12 arrests. Five people were charged with illegal possession of weapons. Police received 48 complaints of offenses relating to property, including 24 cases of theft, three snatchings, and two instances of vandalism. They arrested 18 people in connection with these complaints. There were no reported cases of child prostitution, child labor or “influential figures”.
