Driving tests just got harder

PHUKET TOWN: Learner drivers looking forward to passing the traditional minimalist driving test to get their driver’s license now have to think again. The new driving test area at the Phuket Land Transportation Office (PLTO) was officially opened this afternoon and is in use. Phiyapan Jumpasut, Chief of the Department of Land Transportation, said that the Department was improving driving test facilities at centers around the country so officers could test learners to higher standards. Construction of the test area, which covers more than 3 rai, began on August 13, 2001 and was completed recently at a cost of 2.3 million baht. “We are campaigning to reduce the number of road accidents because they cost the government a lot of money,” K. Phiyapan said. “In addition, from May next year we will no longer issue lifetime driving licenses,” he added. Under the current rules, Thais who have held a driver’s license for three consecutive years can get a license valid until the day they die.
