Burmese woman dies in stabbing attack

PATONG, PHUKET: A Burmese woman last night died of stabbing injuries sustained while fighting off attackers in a workers’ camp in Kalim early yesterday evening.

Patong Police Duty Officer Nitikorn Rawang was informed that a Burmese woman, identified only as “Aa-eeka”, underwent emergency treatment for deep lacerations to the arms and chest after being rushed to Patong Hospital at about 7pm.

Ms Aa-eeka, 33, later died of her injuries.

She was rushed to the hospital by fellow residents at a Burmese laborer’s camp located off Phra Barami Road Soi 6, in Kalim.

After going to the hospital, Kathu Police Superintendent Grissak Songmoonnark led fellow officers to the camp to investigate.

They found bloodstains on the floor of a small shop that the victim had lived in with her boyfriend, also Burmese.

Initial investigation revealed that the attack occurred after the boyfriend went out on an errand, leaving the woman alone.

An unknown number of assailants then entered Ms Aa-eeka’s room in an apparent attempt to rape her, police said last night.

When Ms Ae-eeka tried to fight off her attacker or attackers, she was stabbed repeatedly.

She managed to escape, but didn’t get far. A neighbor, who heard the commotion and ran out to investigate, found Ms Ae-eeka collapsed in a pool of blood and rushed her to hospital.

Police last night said they suspected one or more residents of the camp were responsible because the attack place took place when the victim was alone.

However, today Col Grissak told the Gazette that police cannot confirm rape as the motive for the attack, nor do they have any firm leads or suspects in the case.

The legally registered Burmese workers in the camp refused to give any information, while a number of unregistered Burmese left the camp following the murder, he said.
