Aussie Navy trounces Vagabonds 36-10

KOH KEAW: After a tight game in the first half, the team from the visiting Australian Navy ship HMAS Newcastle took charge to score a convincing 36-10 victory over the Phuket Vagabonds at Dulwich International College field on Monday. The Vagabonds were the first on the scoreboard with an unconverted try in the 10th minute of the game. Their lead was short-lived, however, as an Australian Navy player bombed through the Vagabonds’ defensive wall to touch down, converting to take a lead of 7-5. Still in the first half, the Vagabonds won a scrum, but lost the ball to the opposition who deftly passed it out to make a second try. This, too, was converted, taking the Navy’s lead to 14-5. Near the end of the first half, the Vagabonds came back to narrow the margin to 14-10, after a Vagabonds player pounced on a loose ball and ran it over the line. The heat took its toll on the host team in the second half, as the Vagabonds suffered their usual, inevitable collapse and allowed the Navy to bury them with four more tries, one converted. Visiting or potential players are invited to join the Vagabonds’ training and practice matches, normally held on Thursdays at Dulwich. For more information, call Patrick Cotter at 01-8920093.
