600,000 tons of trash weighs down Krabi

KRABI: Deputy Prime Minister Admiral Narong Pipatanasai was in Krabi today to see what can be done about 600,000 tons of untreated waste piling up in the province.

Admiral Narong met with Krabi Governor Pinit Boonlert and other provincial agencies at Krabi City Hall to discuss waste management measures as well as to observe progress on other public works undertaken by the province.

Krabi Municipality has requested 25 million baht in funding from relevant agencies to address the trash and waste problem and is waiting for that to be approved, it was reported.

Officials were also briefed on the implementation of economic stimulus measures to help farmers and poor families, and the work of the Dam Rong Tham Center in solving social issues.

The Deputy Prime Minister confirmed that he will continue to promote waste treatment efforts in Krabi. He also expressed concern over tourist safety following explosions and the incidence of arson in seven of the southern provinces last month – instructing all concerned to ensure safety for tourists.

Adm Narong previously visited the province in March to help seek a solution to stem the tide of 1,800 cubic meters of wastewater a day spewing into the marine park (story here).
