An inconvenient curfew
UBON RATCHATHANI: Two young drunks arrested for allegedly smashing up a 7-Eleven convenience store told police the attack was motivated by hunger.
Suspects Kasemsan Saiwong, 19, and Sorayut Saithong, 20, said they launched the attack in anger at the store closing early because of the curfew in place in Ubon and other provinces.
Police received a report in the early hours of May 23 that the glass front of a 7-Eleven branch in Muang District had been smashed.
Witnesses reported seeing three youths smash the shopfront before speeding off on a motorcycle. Police soon found the vehicle in a nearby soi and arrested the two suspects.
The pair told police they had been drinking all day at a traditional rocket festival in Kheuang Nai District.
After getting home, the pair felt hungry and went out to find food – but all the shops and restaurants were shut for the night under the curfew imposed by the Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES).
Seeing their own nutritional plight as an emergency situation in need of resolution, they took their anger out on the 7-Eleven, kicking in the shopfront to get at some grub.
Both men have been charged with criminal damage breaching the Emergency Decree, police said.
The third suspect remains at large.
