A 20 year old Thai rescue volunteer, Witwattanachan Chanthasri, faced a heartbreaking tragedy when he had to perform the burial of his four-day old son recently. Witwattanachan, who works as a rescue volunteer for the Buriram Provincial Highway Police, is known for his dedication to helping others in need. He often transports patients and deals with a variety of emergencies.

Witwattanachan shared the story of his family’s loss. He said that on April 29, while he was transporting a patient from Nang Rong Hospital to Nong Ki Hospital, he encountered another emergency. This involved a premature baby that was being transferred to Nang Rong Hospital by Nong Ki Hospital’s ambulance. His colleague asked him to help carry the infant, but he declined, reasoning that he was already busy transporting another patient.

Upon arriving at Nong Ki Hospital, however, he was approached by relatives from his wife’s side who informed him that his newborn child had been born prematurely and was in critical condition. The infant, born at just six months and a few days into the pregnancy, had been transferred to Nang Rong Hospital for better care. Witwattanachan immediately realised that the premature baby he had encountered earlier was his son. He promptly drove from Nong Ki to Nang Rong Hospital to visit his infant.

Sadly, his son passed away a mere four days after being born, leaving the devoted father and his family heartbroken. Throughout his years as a rescue volunteer, Witwattanachan had assisted numerous victims, including attending to the dead but never imagined he would have to bury his firstborn child at such a tender age. The family is not holding grudges regarding the death of their son, as Nang Rong Hospital declared that the cause of death was a premature birth and weak lungs.
