Woman driver’s reckless reversal on motorway leads to horrific crash with lorry

A six-wheel lorry smashed into the back of a reckless woman driver who reversed over 1 kilometre down a busy motorway in Samut Prakarn because she missed her exit. A rescue service team sent the injured woman to hospital after the incident.

The incident occurred yesterday at 6am on the Bang Na-Chon Buri or Burapha Withi Expressway in Samut Prakarn province, near Bangkok. Upon arriving at the scene, the rescue team found the woman in shock with injuries to her head and right arm. They provided first aid before transporting her to the hospital.

The woman’s sedan suffered damage to both the front and back, while the truck that collided with her sustained damage to its front end. A security camera on the motorway captured footage of the black sedan reversing down the hard shoulder of the road. The woman driver swerved into the inside lane multiple times before the camera stopped recording. The crash itself was not captured on camera, but traffic reports indicate that the woman reversed because she missed her exit and wanted to turn back.

The truck driver, Sumart Rakpra, was not hurt in the accident. He reported that he was en route to the central province of Rayong when he saw the sedan driving in reverse, but was unable to change lanes due to another car and was unable to stop in time before hitting the car.

The Expressway Police have not yet clarified any charges against either driver, but according to Section 139 of the Land Transport Act, drivers are not allowed to make U-turns, reverse or drive backwards on a motorway. Violators of this rule could be fined up to 1,000 baht.

Another accident occurred earlier this year on the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway in Bangkok. A drunk driver crashed his luxury Bentley into an SUV and a fire rescue pickup, injuring six people. The driver initially fled the scene and refused an alcohol test, but later surrendered himself at the Expressway Police Station.
