FDA warns hair colouring enthusiasts in Thailand to avoid South Korean products that cause cancer

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Thailand has issued a warning to hair colouring enthusiasts after discovering that three South Korean hair-dyeing products contain cancer-causing chemicals.

The FDA identified the products as Seedbee’s Water Colouring Medium Brown and Seedbee’s Water Colouring Wine Brown, both produced by Soky C&T Co Ltd, and Mielle Professional’s Blondie Anne Treatment Colour Cream, manufactured by JPS Cosmetics Co Ltd.

According to the FDA’s report, the hair dye sample lab tests revealed that the three products contained o-aminophenol and m-Phenylenediamine, which are prohibited in cosmetics due to their hazardous nature. Malachi Co Ltd imports the Seedbee products, while Dimensionhair Co Ltd imports the Mielle product, Bangkok Post reported.

To prevent consumers from buying uncertified beauty products, the FDA recommends that all cosmetics should have Thai labels that display information about the manufacturer, importer, ingredients, expiry date, instructions, and warnings. Retailers should purchase products only from certified wholesalers or manufacturers.

This recent FDA warning is just one of many in Thailand in recent years.

In 2020, the FDA issued a warning about counterfeit cosmetic products that contained hazardous substances, and in 2019, it warned the public about the use of skin lightening products that contained mercury. Consumers must be vigilant when purchasing cosmetic products and ensure that they buy only from certified and reputable sources.

The FDA urged the public to check its website or Facebook page before buying any beauty products to see a list of cosmetic brands that have been found to contain prohibited substances. The list includes the brand name and several images of the products. Complaints can be lodged with the FDA through its official Facebook page or Line Official, @FDAThai, and its hotline, 1556.

The Thai FDA has issued several warnings in the past about hair products containing potentially harmful ingredients. In particular, the FDA has warned against the use of products containing mercury, lead, and formaldehyde.

The FDA has also issued warnings about products containing potentially toxic ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, and sulfates. Additionally, the FDA has warned against the use of certain types of hair dyes and straighteners as they may contain carcinogenic or hazardous components.
