Hackers get into the Cathay Pacific database
Cathay Pacific says they’ve uncovered a data breach where the personal information of more than 9 million passengers could have been stolen.
Cathay Pacific has clarified that a wide range of data, including passenger names, dates-of-birth, phone numbers, email contacts and passport numbers, was potentially exposed in a hack of its information systems earlier this year.
In a statement the Hong Kong based airlines’ CEO Rupert Hogg said they are contacting all the people that may have been affected.
“We are very sorry for any concern this data security event may cause our passengers.”
“The hackers who hit the Cathay database gained access to 27 credit card numbers but without the card security codes. Another 403 expired credit card numbers were also accessed,” according to the airline.
“We have no evidence that any personal data has been misused and no passwords were compromised.”
The company has notified Hong Kong police. It has also set up a dedicated website, infosecurity.cathaypacific.com for concerned Cathay customer that believe they could have been affected by the hack.
