Hunt for teen gangs involved in Sunday night shootout
Sunday night’s random shootout in Bangkok and the death of an Indian tourist has shocked the city.
Police are on the hunt for two groups of teenagers they believe were involved in the brawl that ended up in a shootout in a Bangkok hotel car park. The melee and shootout has left one Indian tourist dead and five others injured.
The incident took place at about 8.30pm Sunday night at the car park of Centara Watergate Pavillion Hotel in the Ratchathewi district. Police believe were there up to 120 Thai teenagers involved in the brawl.
One Indian citizen was killed by stray bullets, while four others – Thai, Lao and Indian nationals – were injured in the crossfire.
Witnesses say many of the teenagers were holding knives and one of them was equipped with an AK rifle who opened fire on his ‘opponents’. He then continued to spray bullets at them while chasing them.
At that same time there was a large group of Indian tourists waiting for a tour bus in the area, according to witnesses.
Following Sunday night’s incident, national police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda had ordered Bangkok police to step their security and suppression on illegal weapons to ensure public safety.
