Bangkok condo search finds 2 Swedish nationals wanted for serious crimes
Thai Immigration Police arrested a Swedish man wanted in Sweden over murder and other serious crimes at a condominium in Bangkok on August 23. Officers also detained another Swedish national for helping him hide.
Immigration Bureau investigators received information from the Nordic Police Affairs Division about the wanted Swedish national, identified as Kevin, who had entered Thailand to evade arrest. Swedish authorities reportedly wanted him in connection with murder, attempted murder, arson and extortion.
Investigators found that Kevin entered Thailand through Suvarnabhumi International Airport on May 17. He then travelled to Koh Samui in Surat Thani and frequently changed accommodation, reportedly to avoid detection.
Police also found that another Swedish national, identified as Alex, had helped Kevin by providing accommodation, food and other necessities. Swedish authorities reportedly wanted Alex as well.
The two men later left Koh Samui and moved to a luxury condominium in the Rama 9 area of Bangkok. Immigration Police then coordinated with a support team to track them down.
On August 23, officers monitored the area outside the condominium and found Kevin. Police arrested him and searched his room, where they found Alex.
Kevin was found to have overstayed his permitted stay in Thailand by nine days, while Alex had overstayed by 195 days.
Officers also seized three mobile phones and three credit cards, which they believe may be connected to the alleged offences. The items will reportedly be sent to Swedish police to assist with further investigations into possible associates.
Both men will face legal proceedings in Thailand over their immigration offences before being deported to Sweden.
Immigration Bureau Deputy Commissioner Phanthana Nuchanart said the bureau would continue working with security agencies in Thailand and overseas to locate people wanted under arrest warrants.
The case follows the arrest of an American woman in Bangkok on August 19 who was wanted in the US over an alleged parental kidnapping case. Her ex-husband had accused her of abducting their son, who was later found safe and returned to his father.
In June, a Finnish fugitive was also arrested in Bangkok after reportedly hiding in Thailand for an extended period while wanted over an alleged tax fraud case.
